Hello RedTeam,

Is there a way on the EPIC to switch between 12 bit recording and 16 Bit recording?

I could not find this info in the Epic beta manual.

The specs for the Epic Redcode on Red.com lead me to believe it has this option.

Yes, 16-bit please.

so does the EPIC record in 12 or 16 bit?
red one is 12 bit.

I assume that the Epic records 16-bit linear and/or 12-bit log.

???

Anyone?

My 2 cents...

The raw signal is recorded 12 bit lin but the debayer is done in higher res. So exporting to 16bit tiff or ... could makes sense.

12bit raw instead of 16bit could be seen as a way of eliminating unecessary data. 12bit raw r3d is not like 12bit dpx as the debayer processing has to be applied to get a visible image.

But everything changes in life...

Hm Pat.
With all due respect
I assume you are way off... :-)

You'll need an overhead in the RAW/lin data to get the precission you'd want.
16-bit RAW recording makes so much sense on so many levels...
12 bit, not so much (if 16-bit is an option...)

And I would not be surprised if that's what is mainly going on, from what I see....

But of course: I am just guessing, as anyone else here.

The only thing I can remember is there was an debate about 10 bit log VS 12 bit lin. Some said it was better to have 10bit log files and argued RED made a mistake using the 12bit lin...

As this debate is from 2008... it's just a far memory...

Greame or a RED team member will have the truth ;-)

As of today... I don't see the advantage to increase by a lot the dataflow with little (no?) image quality gain.

See you Gunleik!

Pat

Still speculating of course, but I see a lot of advantages with 16-bit lin
And I do see the improvement in image quality... :-)

Have to add that a 12/16 bit linear difference would explain a lot of the differences I see on the MX sensor on R1 and on Epic...

Bump.

I'm pretty sure that it does not record 12 bits per sample because it would not be able to capture 13.5 stops. The minimum would be 14-bits.
