  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Enter the Dragon

True, but I think embracing technology and make it work is key. I think Ansel Adams would it been the first to embrace tools like Photoshop :)

I agree with you there!!

There is a new IR/LP that is designed specifically for the Dragon sensor. We are learning a lot of ways to make things better.

I'd also encourage you to wait just a bit to see what this program can really do... Graeme and the engineers have just gotten started pulling the levers and spinning the knobs.

Jim
No Rush, take your time, we know your putting your all into this, we love what you guys are doing! With these type of technical miracles, such as a huge DR, it might need another cycle to overcome some major hurdles(I mean in my brain the camera has moved from 16 bit to 24 bit, that's just insane). I figure I'm going to have to break into my piggy bank to upgrade my epic and 2 scarlets anyway, so I wont really be able to upgrade till this October . For now, I need to focus and make sure I'm making a great movie with the awesome RED camera's I currently have, and learn the craft so I can take advantage of the Dragon when it is generally available.

Both early posts got deleted as well... let's enjoy the Dragon for now. How's that sound?

Jim

It was my post that was deleted, funny thing is I was the victim of the name calling. Thanks. Now I understand Ketch even more now!

It's amazing about the dragon but what about the people who wants to keep their scarlet. Everything is getting better for the Epic but it seems that Scarlet will stay the same. Any change of firmware update to get the new low noise factor or more frame rate? something to give a reason to buy a scarlet and not just save for the epic. it's still to market. it would be nice to have the same quality of Epic with less resolution. not the dynamic range but more frame rate and low noise etc.. what do you think?

Sorry Jim, Sometimes I get a little to "militant" in my support here for RED, my skin is too thick at times. I will keep my comments in check! AND yes!! Enjoy the incredible news regarding DRAGON!!

I'm cool....lol

Thanks!!

Wow.
I do hope that you will still keep the HDRx mode. It's a very interesting mode and useful still I would think :)
Best,
Andreas

So, how does the Dragon achieve this dynamic range?

One solution could be doing multiple readouts per scan (plus some clever maths), in which case the limited dynamic range of lenses would not be a limitation. Remember, you can always trade temporal resolution for dynamic range.

However, if Dragon achieves the 18+ stops natively, the contrast of lenses may be a limiting factor. In such case, It would make sense to leave HDRx there. Sunset/sunrise time lapse, for example, require about 20 stops or more.

With 18+ stops of DR, IR contamination becomes an interesting issue as I'm not aware of filters able to cut IR sharply by more than 18 stops. So many questions... :)

You guys must be having great fun sorting out all of those issues, LOL

Here Here... Please tell us new Scarlet adopter who aren't interested in Dragon (YET!!) that we've made the right decision and not bought into a dead end product... Even 24/25fps at 5K would be perfect. not bothered about slowmo etc...

'Better than Gobal Shutter' (my words)
Easier to compress (so smaller file at equal ammount of resolved detail)
18+ stops..................

It's alive!

Congrats and enjoy the tweaking. Hope everyone that worked so hard to get to these nose-bleeding heights thoroughly enjoys seeing Dragon come alive before their eyes!!

The SCARLET will not be a "dead end" product, just like a Red One is not a "dead end" product,
because you can still make beautiful movies with them.

WOW

Happy New Years and thank you for keeping up the great work!

I don't comprehend how a new upgrade option can be equated to a dead end.
