  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Enter the Dragon

doubtful.. Tarantino already said he is done with making movies.. he cant stand digital and refuses to shoot it.. he would rather write than subject himself to digital
And the dinosaurs went extinct too...

I don't think resolution or sharpness is an issue here. :-)

Jim

Why dont you guys create something similar to the Fuji X Trans sensor? No OLPF means even sharper images.

If it is too sharp it just might not look pleasing to the eye.

Plus aliasing does not look good.

Good way to start the new year. Any chance we can see a shot of the waveform monitor for that screen grab? Thanks!

I just bought a BT Scarlet a couple months ago with the plan of having a future proof camera with the dragon upgrade path. Now I'm happy for Team Red and the new Dragon sensor news but I don't know if I should be happy for myself yet. I'm a little nervous without all of the upgrade option details as far as price and time frame I will have to get it done. Good job team Red congrats to you, but me as a new Scarlet owner getting the news I can't upgrade to dragon within my new camera, I'm now biting my nails. I know I'm a newbie to the Red family, but reading all the post it seems that I'm the only one that feels like this?:confused5::hurray::confused5::thumbup1::sad::willy_nilly::undecided:. Help team Red please give me a little more upgrade detail for encouragement! LOL

Will the EPIC dragon still need to window the sensor for much higher frame rates? Or has that changed also?

There once was a man named Jannard
who took on a very old guard
The team he assembled
did scarcely resemble
the old guard's complacence
with progress adjacence
They forged on ahead
'neath a banner of RED and kicked ass in the guard's own backyard

Scarlet users should be doing backflips :) It has been one of the biggest requests from Scarlet owners to be able to trade up to an Epic.. and that was before we knew just how significant Dragon has become :)

Thank you so much! Wonder if us early Nov 3rd will get full value?

Scarlet owners should in no way feel cheated. Think about it, the moment you use a scarlet and realize the power of these cameras, you immediately wish it could do all the things Epic can, hence everyone saying "scarlet is a gateway drug." As a scarlet owner having the choice of upgrading to a crippled dragon or saving up more and having the best that RED can offer I would without a doubt pick the second option. This upgrade isnt happening next month. Owners have a lot of time to decide what their choice will be and save up for the upgrade when the time comes. If the owner of a camera as powerful as the Scarlet cant save up the extra dough over the next 6-12 months or more for the trade in then the dragon probably isnt going to do much for you anways, because as of now the scarlet can do pretty amazing things at an awesome price point. Scarlet was a way for me to buy into the RED ecosystem without selling a kidney, familiarizing myself with the technology and workflow, and now I'll have the choice to trade in for the best the company has to offer and presumably save a lot of money compared to RED saying if you want a dragon buy it at full price.

cant wait to see actual footage now...i have worked with digital capture for 20 years now and these new specs are pretty much what i have always dreamed of....the DR combined with mpix and frame rate is a revolution for still photography as well!
how will the scarlet upgrade/trade in work? i was hoping for a scarlet/dragon upgrade but this solution is great as well....but i guess i would prefer to upgrade to epic at this point sooner then later, i thought i might sidestep the epic but now i want it sooner then later....do i have to wait for the dragon epic to come out or can i trade in now for epic with future dragon upgrade?
regardless...truly exciting news....

Jim hinted that the full size Dragon would come in at around 80 fps (a few weeks ago the estimate was 96). I seem to recall he also said higher frame rates would come at slightly lowered rez. If RED's history holds up, I doubt they will line skip or do any other machinations to create a full size image at lower resolutions. Remember the 6K sensor is going to be slightly larger (15%, v and h) than the MX so windowing to 5K or 4K for higher fps will probably work out just fine.

EDIT: Ah - here's his quote earlier in this thread:
I'm not quite sure if everyone fully understands what this actually means. This is the 1st time in history that a digital sensor blows away the dynamic range of film... and at a resolution that rivals 65mm. Couple that with 80+ fps at full resolution. Of course you can shoot lower resolution at higher frame rates. Record to a small SSD. REDCODE. Dragon. RED.Jim

Wide Color Gamut?

Wide Color Gamut?

What about the Color Gamut of the Dragon sensor. Will it be as wide as the sensor on the Sony F55/F65? Why doesn't anyone here discuss what the Color Gamut is of the Mysterium-X chip? I'd like more information on that aspect please. I just need to know.

Happy New Year everybody! Good news.
