  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Enter the Dragon

QUOTE: "I'm sure the folks at Sony and Arri are saying "WTF" right about now"

Only so long as they have not been sitting on their hands with a new sensor ready to go and amortising as much as they can from the current sensor line-up by holding back on innovation until they feel the point of another sharp stick on their respective rears.

A light leak around the engineering lens mount into the sensor? Is that not going to introduce an aberrant result for dynamic range through a similar additive principle as pre-fogging film or using an actively illuminated filter. The last thing I want to be is a killjoy but as a valid test regime it can't fly as I read and interpret the original post. There likely has been a misinterpretation by me, as in something subtle lost in the translation from meringlish to strine. An alternative interpretation might be that the mount does not have a non-reflective finish in which case there will be some internal reflection and some bloom. This might also confer a smaller additive aberration in the dynamic range result. - I am prone to long guesses based on too little knowledge and training so please place a very big challenge on any comments I make.

If the 20 stops is the real deal, what you have there is remarkable and undoubtedly you will be all well pleased as you should be. - Like a bunch who have just built a new formula 1 motor, or the researchers just about to light off the first multimegaton firecracker and can't wait for the show.

There may well also be military, scientific and maybe astronomy applications if the sensor becomes more cost-beneficial than any similar hardware those outfits may have.

There is a new IR/LP that is designed specifically for the Dragon sensor. We are learning a lot of ways to make things better.

I'd also encourage you to wait just a bit to see what this program can really do... Graeme and the engineers have just gotten started pulling the levers and spinning the knobs.

Jim

Good news..........This HISTORIC THREAD has just been accepted into the SMITHSONIAN.

Oh, I kid!

;)

But the news here is MIND BLOWING!

Thank You Jim, Jarred, Graeme, Rob, Nick, Brent and etc...

Happy New Year!

As for REDCODE and Dragon, the Dragon sensor has significantly less noise than the MX sensor (less than half) which makes REDCODE's job much easier.

I remember your fantastic DiCaprio cigar smoking at 2000 ISO footage......so now you're talking the same
basic noise (or lack of noise) at 4000 ISO......time for another cigar shoot!

Great news, we will be in RedCode heaven!

I wonder how long Jarred has been sitting on his hands waiting to use the thread title "Enter the Dragon" - he had to be saving that one up for something special.

I can't shake this image off and go about my day. This is special. The digital imaging singularity. This is "milk girls" special.

So what if I WANT to blow out the dragon sensor and make someone's face blown out for artistic purposes? I guess now I have to rent an 18k HMI and position it 3 feet from the talent's face :(

Jim, hopefully when this is ready to release to the world it is met with sincere optimism from the entire industry. As we accept the transition from film to digital, it's in the industry's best interest to have companies like RED pushing the limits of digital acquisition so that film's eventual departure (I still hope it never goes away entirely) is done so with grace and a formidable replacement is there. I know competition is the nature of the beast and things will be twisted and marketing will do it's thing but I really do hope they give you a fair shake on this one and treat you with respect. In other words, I hope there is a lot of objective analysis done and the new Epic is treated on it's own merits and not on perception based on myths or ghosts of the past.

The chart looks impressive. I look forward to footage as you guys tweak the sensor and color science. Keep forging ahead. You're ahead of the curve and it's really exciting stuff.

New IR OLPF for Dragon :)

Awesome, I think this is one of the most important thing that need to be worked upon (and I am sure there is something awesome there.). IR has been our main issue. I like shooting wide open, most of the time. And IR is killing us right now. Especially, when you cant test these filters, as the retailers of these things dont have any in stock to test.

I'm gonna be sad shipping my first RED back to RED, shot so much with it in the last year. But having a dragon EPIC, I think I can get by. Haha. This looks amazing, can't wait to trade up. Thank you for this amazing opportunity. Another reason why I will always invest and shoot on RED!

Haha - am I the only one imagining all the people rubbing their hands together in anticipation of buying a BT Scarlet, at an insane closeout price, a year down the road? LOL

(What else will they do with all those trade-in Scarlets?) :sneaky2:

hehe! I'm already salivating!

RED Team, Jim, Jarred, Graeme, and everyone else who have spent nights weekends and holidays, working on this li'l monster, a heartfelt congrats to you.

Eagerly awaiting upgrade schedules.

Happy New year one and all.
