OK. I think we can all agree that a S35 Scarlet will have a great selection of cinema lenses to complement the camera (RPP, MP, S4, etc.), but what about 2/3" ENG lenses?

It would be fantastic to be able to use the 2/3" portion of the sensor (probably only at 2K) along with an HJ series Canon or HA series Fujinon lens, for run and gun shooting (like documentaries, network, etc). It sounds like there are plans for B4 mount options, which is great, but will there be full interfacing for zoom control, iris control (possibly even CAC correction)?

This feature would give the Varicam following something to think about for sure!

Your thoughts?

If you're going to use 2/3" lenses, you might as well save yourself a bundle and get the 2/3" interchangeable lens Scarlet for $2500. You'd also get access to massively fast frame rates.

There is also a 2/3" option with an interchangeable lens mount that shoots up to 150fps

Edit: beaten to the punch by JV

True, that would save me some cash, but I think I'd rather have the option of shooting S35 frame size for narrative work, as opposed to being able to shoot 150 fps at 3K on a 2/3" frame size.

Just my feeling...

Ideally, a S35 Scarlet with full 2/3" ENG capabilities would eliminate the need for me owning and separate ENG camera. I think that's a more valuable cssh saver, having one camera that can pretty much do anything you throw at it.

That's why me and others advocate for Red to make the DSMC broadcast/live/hardlined ENG capable.

What about the optic differences between 3chip eng cams and the one chip scarlet??? I'm not sure this will work out correct in terms of shading and chromatic aberration. IMO there must be differences in the consruction of the lens, but I'm not sure. Anybody can tell for sure? :confused5:

B4 mount will have to have optical correction built in, just as the adapter for Red One does.

And what about electrical connections? I haven't heard any mumblings around the forums, and it would be great to have automatic iris control or the ability to use the zoom rocker.

Currently Red One supports servo power with custom cables, the new cams will probably do the same. Don't expect auto-iris support though. Most of us would never use it if it was there. Even stringing TV news, I always set iris manually using zebras and a properly calibrated viewfinder.

I know what you mean, but I still believe you'll get better performance using a 2/3" broadcast lens from a 2/3" 3K Scarlet than you will with an S35 5K Scarlet sensor cropped to 2/3". Of course this needs to be tested once the actual production models are available, but the 5K sensor cropped to 2/3" won't have 3K resolution, will it?

Your best bet would probably be to have BOTH the S35 and 2/3" Scarlet brains. All the other accessories will work for both brains, so you can just pick the brain you need for either cinema work or ENG work.

For much less than the price of a decent B4 HD lens you could get the complete Scarlet 2/3" fixed as a B-cam/ENG cam. The only model as of now with full electronic controls. Long side of the lens may be a little short, but most ENG is wide angle/short focal lengths anyway and there should be extenders available.

When the time comes you will have choices available to you depending on exactly the timing i which they become available, but as of now be very aware of limited availability of 2/3 Glass, but mostly understand that the Scarlet 2/3 is one chip Sensor and 2/3 glass was originally intended for 3CCD Chip sensors, very different animal all together, so you must do some research first and take the various aspect of both 2/3 glass availability and their compatibility with Scarlet.

If for what you like to do the fixed lens Scarlet offers in off of a wide angle, which by all means it should, and most importantly offers the long range suitable to your style of shooting and needs of reach, then there is no question about it, off course here are to be seen the full spectrum of broadcasting possibilities.

ciao

* Also to correct some previous posts, the Scarlet 2/3 shoot 120fps (@ 2k only) with Burst up to 150fps, this is burst frame rate not shooting rate of 150fps, very different, also shooting @ 2k will mean cropping the sensor there for changing DOF perception, Focal etc.

ciao

There was no mention in 2/3" Scarlet specs of a 2k crop mode. I believe it shoots all of its frame rates at full resolution in RAW mode for any of its listed aspect ratios. 2k crop only applies to S35 and ff35 models.
