Sounds like they started shooting in NOLA yesterday. Great looking cast! Anyone know what it's being shot with? Asa Butterfield, Harrison Ford and Ben Kingsley, not bad!

I will go in with no-hope and hopefully be pleasantly surprised.

Yeah, as much as this was one of the most important books of my formative age, good luck to try and bring it to the big screen!

Very good book. The casting is just about perfect, too -- I'm glad they upped the ages of the kids, because it never would've worked with 8 year olds. Should be a very cool movie.

One of my favorite book, With Gavin Hood in charge let's hope it will not end like X-men origins.

I did have a much longer reply here...but decided to trim it back...you never know who you're gonna end up working for.

Suffice it to say, that Hood was not responsible for what became of that movie.

According to IMDB:

Camera
Red Epic

Laboratory
LightIRON Digital, Los Angeles (CA), USA (digital intermediate)

Film negative format (mm/video inches)
Redcode RAW

Judging by the trailer it looks very nice, also I somehow missed that the DP is great Don McAlpine! I think I've seen almost every his interview available on youtube, his bits from Side by Side and that older Kodak lighting workshop thing. Cool beans.

Whoever chose which shots to put in the trailer should be beat with a rubber hose... Just sayin' Typical marketing blunder; put the story's climax in the trailer. WTF?... Jeebus. Almost as bad as the Prometheus trailer...

Anyway, looking forward to the movie. Hopefully they didn't butcher the story too bad, but it was a complex book to adapt.

This looks more and more promising every time I see something. I didn't think they would actually give us space battles.

Actually, there's a major surprise in the book's ending that's not in the movie trailer.

Two books: Ender's Game and Ender's Shadow -- the exact same story told from the viewpoint of another character. The books were interesting, but I think the changes in the script and casting, plus the growing protests against Orson Scott Card, will not help its commercial success.

Sure, the trailer can't show EVERYTHING. The point was, why do they do this? IMO, if you need to pull from anything past the half-way point in your film to make a compelling trailer, then the movie probably sucks anyway. Save the best for the actual showing. I referenced the Prometheus trailer. None of us had seen the film yet and after watching the first trailer, my initial reaction was, "well, I guess I don't need to see the movie now". And that pretty much summed it up. They showed way too much. Case in point, the movie sucked anyway and there wasn't much other substance to pull from to make a compelling trailer.

I haven't read any more in the series than Ender's Game. There were several twists and turns, if I recall. I'm sure the movie will eliminate many aspects of the book.

We shall see... I think the mass audience at large will be oblivious to Card's sociopolitical views as they're just going out to see a movie. The majority of movie-goers will have not even read the book.

Agree with you on movie trailers Jeff. I could pretty much write a very accurate treatment for Prometheus after seeing that trailer a few times. When I saw the film for the first time I kept hoping something new was around the corner and it never was.

Regarding Card, I hear that there will actually be some boycotts and public campaigns against the film. I certainly don't recall any offending material in the book(s), so it becomes an interesting moral situation.

I'm for sure looking forward to this movie, this to me is a "Hobbit"/"ET" type of super A level movie (i.e. could have numbers like the initial ET, but globally). I play a session of Starcraft daily, to keep my APM up and understand the scene, this type of movie could be revered by the global e-sports crowd(I bet the South Korean numbers will be crazy). Without reading the book, i don't think the trailer is that obvious(just enough so the e-sports crowd get's it - most of which I don't think have read the Enders series [ ages 14-29, fair mix of girls in there too]). Negative US press could possibly shift numbers a bit to non-us, but I don't see that as a major problem.

Excited for the movie. Definitely agree with Jeff on the trailer. Early days. But for me it's the psychological journey of Ender and his moral dilemmas that makes this as such a unique and brilliant book. It's one hell of a coming of age story - and worries me a little that this is being neglected for the more obvious marketing approach of Earth V Aliens with huge FX. Again. E sports crowd indeed. But there will be other trailers and hopefully this is not indicative to the approach to the film as a whole and rather just standard blockbuster marketing procedure.

Seems I might be alone in preferring the original age of Ender. It was one of the things that made it so powerful in the delivery of it's various messages to me personally. Heightening the themes around control, innocence, abuse, violence and power. Making it less palatable perhaps, but a much more powerful and adult story. To my mind like if Lord Of the Flies was made with 14-17 year olds. It would still be a valid story, but not anywhere near as powerful in it's message.

I'm sure there are some good reasons though. And i'd be interested to hear from those like Marc who are glad it's ben aged up. Because I hate the idea that nags at me that being more marketable to tween age girls and a larger family demographic might have been key. I'd be very disappointed to see Enders game being a case of pixarification as Danny Boyle put it recently.
