Does anybody know if this is possible?

According to the manual, HDMI should display the on screen menus if a RED LCD or EVF is not connected by default.. but this doesn't seem to be true for HD-SDI.

We currently only have a HD-SDI monitor to connect to the EPIC (I could use a HDMI screen to do this, but I've tried a few HDMI screens, none of which work yet), and can get a display with guides and TC, but no menus. No other displays available for now. Does any body know whether it's possible to turn the SDI menus on without having a RED LCD or similar handy?

Cheers!
Seth

You're going to need some method of controlling the camera: touch screen, sidehandle or redmote. The feed to the video outs can then be changed in any number of ways. Can you borrow one of these in order to set up your camera?

Hi Shane!

Apologies, I forgot to mention that we have the Side Handle.

Do you know whether there is any way to either enable the menus on HD-SDI, or enable HDMI (Which I'm now assuming must be turned off completely by default as we can't get it to work at all) Via the Side Handle?

Would be greatly appreciated!

You can certainly enable MENUS on the HD-SDI under s/w release 2.0.5 which is now available... not sure about earlier code.

Select : SETTINGS / AUDIO_VIDEO / MONITOR CONTROL then set HD-SDI to MENUS ...

..and if LCD / EVF are still connected set that to CLEAN or PREVIEW.

Thanks Stuart!

The problem is that we don't have a RED LCD or EVF here to get into the menu in order to make that setting change to begin with.

Do you know whether there is a way to turn that on without the RED LCD or EVF, using the side handle?

Perhaps there's a conbination of button presses on the side handle that do it, do the menus still work without the RED LCD or EVF attached?

Sounds like it would be really handy to be able to save a camera setup from a working camera as a config file.
This config file could then be stored for later use and/or emailed to other users. Slap this config file on an SSD and when the camera boots, it reads the config file and sets the camera up as needed.

That would indeed be of great help here. Having said that, obviously there are many features that are not enabled yet - so I'm sure this kind of thing will have a solution in the future (if it doesn't already).

I've lodged a support ticket with RED, and I'll post back here if I find a solution. In the meantime, if anybody else has a way to do this, I'd be extremely grateful.

Cheers!

Thanks! I think the Redmote is backordered even longer than the LCD..

We have the Side Handle - anyone know whether it's possible to enable HDMI out using the Side Handle? Or enable menus for SDI using the Side Handle? Either of those should get the job done..

Just an update on this:

Word from RED is that there is currently no way to enable menu's on HDMI or HD-SDI without having a RED LCD or EVF. I'm sure there will be a solution down the track but for now we are going to have to wait until our Touch LCD is delivered before we can get our baby rolling.

Cheers,
Seth

Also - RED has been extremely helpful on this, they suggested a bunch of stuff to try, before concluding that it's not currently possible. The guys over at RED HQ really want to help and it's much appreciated.

Cheers,
S

Here's a suggestion for everyone which we've found very useful...

Assign one of your user keys (on the Side Handle, Brain, or REDMote) to "Toggle Display Mode". This will allow resources to be re-directed in certain modes for enabling menus and cursors when using an EVF or Touchscreen while also using another monitor.

We are currently using a TVLogic (HD-SDI) monitor while needing the Bomb EVF for the Operator in certain shoots. There is a limitation in this build that does not allow for the Menu cursor to be seen in certain configurations, so a quick toggle can bring it back when needed. We have been told that full Menu and Cursor support on HDMI and HD-SDI are coming...
