Elite Lenses

My bad. Why should I be shooting outside when the things happen?

here's the 2008 price list at optical elites web site ..
approx 5000 euro per lens for the 35mm film lens = 7893 us$
& 4500 euro for the 35 digital lens =7103 us$

add approx 27% to the US price if you buy them from USA distributor...

but the things go far beyond that..

as a small example like these glass sellers are dealing with their own USD prices.. take a look on the 75/100/135 mm example:

the 100 mm is EURO 250 more expensive than the 75 mm.. however, same USD price.. absolute lack of congruence..

on the other hand.. the 135 mm has the same price as 100 mm in euros (5250*).. but not in the US.. the US customer has to pay more $2,000.00.. there's a significant difference between both focal lengths.. no difference in the origin.. that's the beef.. currency conversion aside.. apart their own reseller fee..

just for starting: on the 9.6 mm the reseller fee is (after the currency conversion) higher than 40% !!.. just the first example listed..

I didn't save anyones ass, it's pretty easy to find out this information, but i respect a company's desire to handle their business how they see fit. Regardless of weather I agree with their business practices. I'd be pretty pissed off if someone posted the card rates for the Ninjas, because it cut's us out of the loop. I want to know who's inquiring so I can follow up. Is that not a fair thing to ask?

I'm sure plenty of customers think we're expensive but we think we have added value. I Don't know anything about Slowmotion Inc. but if they do service and support for the Elite line that shouldn't be dismissed as without value. If I buy Zeiss or Cooke lenses they can be serviced here in the states no problem. Is that also true of Elites if you buy them from the factory and cut out SMI. Cinema lenses are low volume, even with Red, SMI might expect a few hundred sets sold Vs. 100,000 Nikon or Canon lenses. I'm not trying to defend the pricing it's self, that's for you to take up with them, but be a little more understanding of what it means to run a business.

as i said.. i respect your point.. but you should probably agree that you've been a paladin of fair prices.. and what they're EFFECTIVELY charging is far beyond that.. is that not a fair thing to ask you?.. 40%.. 40% my dear evin..

thx.. i have a couple of good friends among you.. but what counts to me is the point..

40%.. 40% my dear evin..
well.. even higher than 40%.. that's just "one" example..

i hope that the origin won't try to change their 2008 russian price list now.. already saved in many CPUs wordwide.. :)

or anyone can call them as a former comunist country's manufacturer trying to play on the capitalist side.. with no other success than a cheap imitation.. i hope not..

Mostly I'm looking out for you, my fellow Redusers. I try when possible to point out what I think are people taking advantage, but the PL lens market as it currently stands is beyond my power to comprehend. I never would have condoned prices as high as they are now but there is so little glass out there compared to demand that market forces are doing what they will. And the Euro has made almost all professional cine glass a Mercedes Benz level investment. I got a quote from Slowmotion (Through Abelcine) on a set of Elites about 9 months ago and theses were the same prices, so I don't think they're gouging you. I guess I feel it's your decision, Weather or not you feel the 40% mark up is in line with the service you get from Solwmotion VS. having to fly back to the Ukrane to have the lens serviced. The Illumiinas will be here soon and we'll see if they offer any better value. Still, even with the mark up the Elites are less than Ultraprimes and about the same as a set of used MIII superspeeds which they are claimed to be better than. So how is that similar to the RP lens guy who was selling Nikkors for 40% over market rate!

In certain focal lengths, the slow motion prices are well above the 40% mark. Filmakers is right.

This is a very silly thread. If this company wants to charge this much for the lenses, and if people pay that much for them, then that's how much they are worth. If people don't buy them, then they are overpriced. And I can tell you that dealing with post-Soviet countries is not easy and that may also be a reason to charge a premium. But there is nothing wrong with high prices as long as somebody is willing to pay that much. It serves no one to complain about it, just don't buy any.

Just too bad for you US guys that the worldwide bulkdeal was foiled by Slowmo. They could have moved several hundred lenses over the counter.
Maybe we Elite lovers of Europe should go together and aproach Optica Elite?
What u say Fred?
