  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Elgato Thunderbolt SSD without separate power supply

Little bit pricey, but there's not much competition out there just yet.

I'm still bummed that so many of these Thunderbolt devices don't include two ports so we can chain devices. Not everyone can be the last device on the chain...

Right now that's because you have to pick between the two. TB cables are active (suck power, you can feel them getting warm), also, daisy chaining requires a lot of extra chips (to support chaining & displayport) which also suck power. That's why all 2 port devices (daisy chainable) need power. If you want to work bus powered, it basically has to be a single port device. Hopefully some of these things will get better (less power draw) over time...

Thanks for that, Rob. While I was aware of most of that, I guess I didn't realize adding a pass-through or ability to daisy-chain would over-draw the power. Intel doesn't exactly market it that way... ;)

I guess that explains why my LaCie Thunderbolt Little Big Disk units have the external power supply while the USB3 models don't need it. And yeah, those Thunderbolt cables do get warm. The one I have on my Pegasus RAID gets rather toasty, I keep a spare because I just know it's going to fail without warning.

This may be a silly question, but couldn't you use an inverter via cigarette lighter plug at a vehicle or adapted outlet?
