I do postproduction for red rental firm. I have a Apple based workflow with final cut and color for grading. Usually I render 720HD QT JPEG offline for costumers to edit and then I reconnect it in Color. When somebody brings me a Premiere project of offline edit, I export EDL form Premier and import it in Final cut.. but there is one stupid thing... if there is a take (camera clip) that was used in sequence more than once. I need to reconnect each of them again and again... Final cut puts numbers at the and of the clips. Like these:
First use of clip is labeled like this: A002_C002xxxx.mov
Second use of same clip is labeled like this: A002_C002xxxx.mov 2 (and numbers continues for each use of same clip)

I have opened the EDL in text editor and there all the clips are with out this numbering at the end of name. So this happens when FCP inports the EDL and count's the clips? Is there a way to solve this? It's really big thing for reconnecting music videos... because there are a lots of clips used for more than one time.

I really appreciate help... thank you for the answers!

Teo,

IMHO, its a PremierePro thing.

EDL CMX 3600 rule does only allow 8 digits. The REEL in Red's metadata is this: A002_C004_123f.R3D. PremierPro's EDL tool scratches the last digits until an 8 digit REEL is created: A002_C00

Under such a REEL A002_C00 FCP cannot distinguish beetween shot A002_C001 or A002_C004, you get it.

FCP's EDL tool is better. It assumes that "_" is not a valid digit and hence the REEL FCP creates off A002_C004_123f.R3D is this: A002C004.

With this REEL all shots have a individual REEL number.

There is no solution to your prtoblem other than reconnecting manually.

Ok... tnx... but how do folks offer people post if they are limited to one editing software? Is there any other way? Maybe reconnecting from Premier directly in Color.. hmm.. I need to try this one maybe. With HD tapes was that so easier... but Red is so better. Clients are used of offline/online workflow, so they can edit on there own. It's hard to explain they need to rent your workstation for edit.

But in theory... If I rename all offline and all online files in 8 digits long names.. then I would be able to reconnect it automatically? Is there any 3th party software like automatic duck, clipfiner, crimson. that could help with this? I tried and read all the manuals for a lots of things but still nothing useful.

Thank you for help!
