OK so I'v shot 8 days worth of footage with our new Red. The client is loving the stuff, but....

Editing proxies in FCP has got jittery playback. Does anybody know what the optimal "no render" settings are for 2K RED proxies. Is there such a thing.

If I use the log and transfer window, they come in good, but it is pretty unstable and crimson doesn't seem to work. Any thoughts?

THanks in advance,

Dave

If you have a slower machine (like a MacBook Pro or iMac), set your RT playback quality to medium or low (I think FCP is set to "high" by default). But still keep RT set to unlimited to prevent having to render.

If you have an 8-core Mac Pro, playing back the 2K proxies in real time shouldn't be much of an issue. At least it isn't for me...

I'm on an 8core mac pro with 8 gigs of RAM. Going out through a kona 3. The Proxies aren't on my fast drive hough. I wonder if that's it. I'll check that.

Am I to understand that there is no way to have proxies on a timeline and not see the orange render bar?

I gave up on the proxies long ago. Other than cuts only and one video layer they were just too problematic. From then on the first step in a RED is to transcode to some self-contained Quicktime .... Mythbusters or not!

I'm With You On This One Editblog, Proxies Are More Trouble Than They're Worth, If You're Offlining Just Use L&t, If Onlining, Build An Extra Day Into Your Schedule To Do It Right With Redcine Or Invest 30k In A Redboxx Lol

@editblog
What app would you recommend to render these selfcontained proxies? I'm testing RedRushes right now. I'm trying to figure out some workflow universal for short en long productions.

I've been using REDrushes now. Before I was using Compressor. If going to Avid I use Compressor to make DNxHD 36 files for Avid.

Is it possible to go directly from R3D via Compressor? If so please share ;-)

mac pro 8-core proxy editing

mac pro 8-core proxy editing

Hello,

Can you tell me your timeline and sequence settings to make editing with proxies smoother? I have a mac pro 8-core and find that I have to render everything. Should I be editing with the _M proxies? I have fully edited a project in _H proxies but each edit I make requires rendering and always has jittery playback. I keep getting the "warning - dropped frames" window. I have a Mac Pro 8-core, 10GB of ram, Decklink Extreme HD card, ATI 1900 card.

Should I keep my sequence in the REDCODE format or change it to something else for smoother playback? Whenever there is a transition used in a REDCODE sequence, the screen goes green.

Thanks,

Norm

You guys are obviously doing something different than we are here in Kansas City. We ONLY edit using proxies, are having zero difficulty doing so (and are absolutely blown away with the results), and can't imagine why anyone would even consider doing anything else.

I believe that we are using the "H" proxy (or whatever the 2K proxy is). We have an 8 core Mac with the Kona 3 card and Blackmagic HD Link Pro or something like that. (My edit machine is at my editor's place, or I could tell you for certain.) It simply could not be easier. Indeed, we can't imagine what the difficulties are, as we're editing an entire feature film with thousands of edit points and have essentially zero difficulty doing so or on playback. I don't know all the specifics, but "Media Manager" is the key to proxy editing success. I'll see if I can get our editor, Kevin Harlan, to put a post on our workflow in the next day or two. He actually invented our proxy workflow in consultation with RED Flowmaster Kevin Stanley and Texas FCP wizard Major Lytton.

Stephen, it will be great if you can post the workflow. The editor that did the last TVC - just small 30 secs edit, was complaining about not being able to edit with more than one layer of video. A system requirement info will also be good. Thanks - Lim

a few things that will help your proxy editing

1. Work from fast drives
2. Drag a clip into a sequence and have the sequence match the clip settings
3. Change realtime settings to unlimited and playback quality to low
4. Deselect hi quality scrubbing
5. Keep your track count as efficient as possible

You should be able to at least edit the _m proxies this way and on a fast machine with fast drives even the _h proxies.

Steve hasnt upgraded. We were sailing editing a feature, no problems at all editing M proxies, then we upgraded, then BAM! orange render bar and strobe-y playback. See my thread about it.
