  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Editing Chair...

The place I am going to after work today has both the Aeron and the Humanscale chairs, so I will be able to try out both!

Again, thanks for SO MUCH ideas.

I did look for local used, but didn't see anything really.

I hope you report the results Rick,i`m really keen to hear what you reckon..that Humanscale chair looks fantastic on their site..happy checking!

I have been using Aeron for a long time.

CRITICAL: They have 3 sizes. If you sit in the wrong one, setup wrong, it will be miserable. I sat in a medium, and I needed a big. End of day I could not feel my legs (well, except fo the pain!)

I have the large and it is great. even though I weigh 150 Lbs less than when I bought it, my body frame is still the same and the chair is great or hours on end.

If you buy it new, and authorized dealer, they are lifetime (IIRC).

I bought my large/"C" and got a great deal off of CL. Took a while, but got one. Mine was as new and I got it for $425. Best $$ spent on a workstation.

Okay, so I have now returned with a new chair :) The chairs I tried out were:

- HermanMiller Aeron
- Humanscale Freedom
- HermanMiller Embody

I know there are a few people here and elsewhere that had recommended the Humanscale Freedom (and Liberty) for me being 6'4" I found the seat very uncomfortable and the back support strange. This chair didn't have the ability I could see in locking any settings in if I wanted to prevent myself from sitting in a particular position. The one really nice part of this chair is if you have neck problems, the neck rest REALLY took any weight off the neck. I was amazed at this.

The Embody has the most amazing back out of all the chairs. When they say this chair contours to you, you have no clue. In EVERY position I sat in this chair, it was awesome. Unlike the lumbar support that is extra for the Aeron, this didn't need it, as the fit was like a glove to your back. However, the seat had two problems. It too was not as comfortable as I wanted and also wasn't deep enough for my legs. Too much space between the end of the chair and the knee even with the end pulled all the way out.

So, that leaves the Aeron size 'C' that I bought. It really felt like the best seat and also had locking positions and a really nice feel to the leaning back tension. We'll see how I feel about it after a few days but so far, it's nice. I have a long night ahead of me so we'll see.

Didn't hurt that the store also had a 10% discount on their Aeron chairs.

That said, people look for different things in a chair. Anyone reading this I would try all these chairs to see what feels right for you!

Thanks Rick, great report..look forward to hearing how your chair shapes up when you`ve had a chance to run it in for a bit..

Graham.

Thanks! And I should mention as well, the high back of the Freedom wasn't something I wanted initially so I would have taken it off to keep anything from being remotely close to my ears.

Okay, so to follow up, I spent ~7 hours straight sitting in the Aeron the other night and it is absolutely fantastic. I cannot recommend this chair enough! Absolutely fantastic.

I spend many an hour in my Aeron. Can't say it feels "comfortable" but I don't have any pain or discomfort after many many many hours.

Keep in mind everyone when you're buying a chair that it isn't necessarily going to be a lazyboy, it's about long term comfort and ergonomics.

Yeah, I tried the B, and that was NO dice! I might have even gone D if they had it just to give me a little more wiggle room :) But you are right, there really isn't anything else like these chairs.

This is a very true statement. I should have mentioned that what I was looking for was a chair that didn't give me pain or discomfort and that is EXACTLY what this chair prevents. That said, certainly some of the Managers chairs I sat in were VERY VERY comfortable, but even at that, most of them were rated for 1 to 3 hours max. Having sat in them, after about two hours, you start to fidget as all that padding is actually pressing on you at the WRONG points.

There is also the Walter Murch style which is to forgo the chair altogether and stand during edit sessions. I've always thought about trying that. I have terrible posture when sitting, even in the good chairs. I tend to slouch. Such a bad habit and I'm sure I'll pay the price eventually. I need to strengthen my back muscles.

When it comes to chairs, I've always found Aeron to be one of the best when adjusted properly.

I stand when I draw as well but I am not sure I would want to edit that way.

Standing is great for about 3 hours and then my back gets tired and my feet start hurting and I slouch far worse than in any chair. Maybe after a fractured vertebrae and a destroyed shoulder I'm just a hopeless cause. :D

I've been at the computer a lot, and just got the Herman Miller "embody" chair.

I'm 5'9" and I've had a bunch of other high end chairs, and this one is like a dream. I am also over my screen a lot since i use a pen for rotoing and stuff, and i was starting to squirm around every 10 minutes and am always reminded that I'm "in a chair". This chair I actually forgot i was sitting. If your over 6 foot, not sure, but you might want to test it before buying. Chair I think is good for people from 5' to 6' (the depth of the chair is even modifiable). I of course got the carbon fiber black one to go with my dragons.

The more I read, the more I'm convinced that a hybrid approach between standing and sitting is the best. Even Murch says that you must use a small stool to put one leg up on for a little bit to give the back a rest. The desks that have the ability to go from seated to standing are cool, although probably won't fit everyone's setup. But in theory you could work half the day seated in an Aeron and the other half standing. There are a lot of studies that talk about the harmful effects of sitting in a chair for 10-12 hours a day. But of course, everyone's body is different and those effects won't be the same for everyone.

I just wish I had been more disciplined about it all these years. Really starting to feel the effects of bad posture.

I've just recently converted to standing and I love it. I do need some sitting breaks but the standing forces a better posture for sure. Comfortable shoes help a lot and the ability to move around a bit more.

I think the blood probably flows better, and your body is just in a more natural position. But I can't do it all day. I'd have to go hybrid.
