Okay, I spent two hours tonight at the local Office Depot, Office Max and Best-Buy and probably sat in 60 different office chairs. Needless to say they were comfortable like bleachers.

So, given the HUGE braintrust here, my ONLY three requirements are this:

(1) No arms. Sometimes I edit video, sometimes I am scoring with a guitar, the arms get in the way, Not to mention, arms are GREAT for pinching fingers under a desk.

(2) Not a huge tall back. When editing audio, tall backs cause audio problems when mixing, especially when the chair is turned slightly.

(3) You can sit on it for 5+ hours. When I am in the zone I AM IN THE ZONE!

I'd like to keep it at least around $500 or less, but I'd love to hear some thoughts from you all on if this is just a useless quest or if there is something out there that just isn't available local.

Thanks!

It's funny you should mention that. I've wanted an Aeron chair for YEARS. What I didn't know is if they were still considered the best, and I believe they still are. I actually sat in a Aeron clone at Office Depot and it was the WORST chair I have EVER sat in and it was their most expensive chair there.

Should I splurge for the full chair, or do you think I'd get by with the basic? I found a basic one with no arms for $629.00, but I'm still looking.

And thanks for the recommendation!

Splurge, it is so worth it. Think of it as $10 a month for the next 5 or 6 years!

As you'll be sitting in it every day, it's well worth it.

I do have Ypsilon Office Chair made by Vitra

and designed by Italian architects

Mario and Claudio Bellini.

When you get the chair and set it up according to the manual you will find it's very comfortable.

Also you can consider getting one with arms as they are fully adjustable and swing away too.

I sit on a yoga ball all day long at my day long day job. The days are long. It keeps my back from going out, which happens when I start slouching in a regular chair. Takes some getting used to, but it's comfortable. And bouncy.

As a purely personal recommendation I would advise against anything without adjustable back support, yoga balls included. Their great for building muscle and posture in short sessions (I use one myself) but for 8-10 hour editing sessions they put too much strain on ones back.

That yogaball chair is crazy looking! I do have one of those balls, they call them swiss balls here, as I use it for a core training class I attend.

There is a local distributor of Aeron chairs, gonna hit their showroom and check out what they have!

The yoga ball looks interesting. I have major back problems(crushed a vertebra as a kid) and edit all day long, for weeks at a time. I have had multiple physical therapy sessions and talked to a lot of people about posture in a chair etc. From what I was told...your hips need to be higher than your knees which keeps strain off of back. At some facilities I tried the hermanmiller chairs. I personally don't like them the plastic in front usually hurts the back of my legs behind the knee. My posture isn't good while sitting in them all day. At one facility they had this chair....http://www.globaltotaloffice.com/gi_2009/control.php?record_id=499 If you look at the "ergonomic features" at picture "F" that is what I like about the chair. I bought one for myself and really like it. It does have a high back...but if you look on that site I think there is a lower back you can buy. I think I paid around $500-$700.

David, I removed the link in your post. It seems that it linked to at least one known phishing site.

As for chairs, I've had an Aeron chair for over 10 years now. I loved it for several years, but it is due for replacement. Their lifetime warranty will not cover general wear and degradation of the product over time from normal use. And the pelicle material has become stretched just enough where it's not as supportive as it used to be. The structural portion across the front of the seat digs into my legs now and I can't sit in it for hours as I used to.

I've been looking for a replacement off and on for the past few months. I'm probably going to order another Aeron chair though. The new ones have changed and look really improved since I bought mine. On mine, the lumbar support was an afterthought and they had just come out with it about the time I bought the chair.

I have a yoga ball and a desk chair. My physio therapist said that you shouldn't sit longer on these than 2-3 hours because it is "work" for the back. But maybe if you're trained enough, you get used to it.

We have similar chairs to the Aeron's too. Although Im not sure if such an amount was paid per chair. Maybe it was. 10 suites x2 chairs per suite is relatively pricey. Will find out what they are. I havent had any issues with them at all for full days at a time.

Aeron is worth every penny. I have one in every suite, some are over 6-7 years old and still look brand new. Cheap Office Depot chairs fall apart after a year of use.

I bought this chair more than 10 years ago at NAB (they were running half price special) and even today it's still like new, with just few cosmetic dings. You need to sit in this chair in order to appreciate its comfort. In my personal opinion, Aeron just doesn't cut it, when you compare the two.

Edit: As I was writing about the chair, I was thinking, that I probably should see, if I could repair my left arm support plastic covering. It cracked from my constant leaning on that side. I spent not even 5 minutes on the phone and the part is ordered and on it's way. No charge! I'd asked about their warranty and it's also lifetime, but there is no wear and tear provision. If it's broken, they just replace it. I think it's fantastic. I was fully prepared to pay for repairs on the product, that's over 10 years old and was bough on sale. And no, I'm not connected to the company in any way, other than just being a happy client.
