We told Red we need a tool that will let us edit and re-name .r3d files.

I've been thinking out this, and here is exactly what I want -

Because Edge Code and Time Code are recorded in each frame - we are not dealing with "re-writing" a "header" like we do in the QT world. So, IMHO, if we need/want to rename or edit meta-data in a .r3d files, this should be done by creating a NEW .r3d file. This way, if you screw up, your "camera original .r3d" is always there.

features:

rename reel #
rename clip name (renames folder and .r3d)
set in and out point (creates a new .r3d files from you in and out point)
change Time Code (enter a manual # at first frame)
swap edge code and time code (this moves edge code values to time code and TC to edge)
add/change/remove "look" file
obviously, select destination folder

This could be in RedAlert or Redcine.

Out of all of those, to me the two most important are renaming the reel # and creating truncated R3d clips. The first is important because right now, the only way to put a reel number in is on the day in the camera. If you have a specific numbering convention, this could be a very easy place for it to get messed up. The truncated files would make raw based conforms much more practical for longform projects, as you wouldn't have to keep all of the original material on line for the entire finishing process (and that could amount to many terabytes on a full feature).

FYI, I have also requested both of these things privately.

These are all very good things!

Do you want to do this because you are afraid of file corruption or because you don't want to loose the old metadata. In the case of the second it seems easy enough for Red to include to copies of the metadata in each .R3D file, one is the camera original metadata which can never be changed and one is the user edited data. In the beggining both are the same.

Most programs will go straight to the user edited data, but the old is still available.

It just seems like making new R3D files has many costs attached to it.

In the case of renaming files themselves. What about a layer of aliases on top of the actual file structure. (Not supported by FAT32 I know.)
