Hi there,

I have a project coming up and the client is insisting on cutting 5K material along side 1080p, and I was wondering what's the best approach? We would be finishing in 1080p

My normal editing process with the EPIC is:

Importing 5K R3D's into Premiere CS6.

Editing on a 1080p timeline for ease and speed.

Copying finished sequence to a 4K or 5K timeline and exporting the rendered timeline to whatever the flavor of choice might be (4K or 1080p) with render at maximum depth checked.

Any thoughts on how to incorporate original 1080p footage into this workflow, or any better suggestion?

If this has been discussed before a link would be much appreciated.

Thanks
Ethan

If you know they're finishing in 1080, why not keep everything in your 1080 timeline, edit, and export? You can use scale to frame size for 4/5K, or turn it off for manual control in terms of reframing a shot if needed.

Seems like you're over thinking it and need some reassurance or am I missing something?

+1

Editing in a 1080 timeline and exporting from the full clips seems like the logical route. You may need to pay more attention to grading the entire piece in a way to match the RAW clips with the 1080 clips.

yup,

just edit away 1080p....throw it into a red 108p preset timeline...no need for a white paper...just manually re size the 5k and dont use 'scale to frame size'

I just hope you didn't shoot 5kHD, as that causes issues with adobe

sorry to hijack, but I'm about to edit 5K and some 1080 and we shot 5K HD. What kind of issues will I run into with adobe?

Ugg....

Haven't done it in a while so hopefully it's fixed....but I doubt it....

It's nothing to do with 1080 .....it's specifically the 5k hd

There is a major slowdown with 5kHD compared to say 5kff

I got hit with this 2 or 3 times...

Your render times may increase by a factor of 5 when using 5K HD....and with a rocket enabled might not even render without crashing

I had to disable rocket, and then had a 15 minute video take over 24 hours to render on a liquid cooled 6 core

It was such a hassle that on subsequent 5k HD projects ...I converted it all to cineform first...
Now the good news is we are so close to the new release that it may be fixed if you can wait a bit..

Otherwise run some tests comparing render speed from 5kHD to say 4k or 5k FF...
The editing usually is acceptable (maybe a little buggy) but its the renders that will kill you

Until this is fixed...just shoot 5k FF from now on with framing guides...and crop to 16x9

Aiii
I have already shot a few terabytes in 5K HD. I have only edited small promo stuff from the footage so far so I didn't really notice any problems. The long render time I got in the end I thought was down to the pc I was borrowing for the editing.
We are building a new pc that should be finished this week. I'll report back

Thanks for the info gents, and no worries about the thread deviating from the original post, it's what it's for :-)
