Hey all,
Could use some helpful advice on picking up a new editing system. Thank you so much in advance!
Order's in for the Scarlet, and I know I will need to upgrade my editing computer to deal with 4K Raw. (I currently have a Macbook Pro 17" 3.06GHz CoreDuo, 8GB RAM, 512MB Nvidia Card - does decently with 1080p footage, but starts to chug with effects and color correction).
I edit mainly on PPro CS5.5. I'm sticking to Mac just because I just can't go back to Windows OS.
Would get a Mac Pro, but the current ones are old and don't have Thunderbolt tech, and people seem skeptical as to when or even if new Mac Pros will be released...
Unless a new Mac Pro is out soon, I'm gonna go with either a new Macbook Pro 17", or keep my current Macbook and get an iMac 27".
Can someone with experience on editing 4K with machines like these weigh in on the experience with Premiere Pro? Can I edit smoothly from the RAW files with either of the below set-ups?
Will rendering out, or effects take forever?
I don't mind playback at 1/2 red or 1/4 res (is that around 1080?) as long as its smooth and responsive.
What sort of difference can I expect in performance between the Macbook Pro and the iMac?
(if I can manage pretty well on the macbook, I do value its portability - I assume my current macbook pro can't do much with 4K footage, correct?)
POTENTIAL MACBOOK PRO 17" SET-UP:
- 2.5Ghz Quad Core i7 (8 virtual cores)
- 8GB RAM
- 750GB HDD (7200rpm) OR 512GB SSD (how much difference will this make for RED footage? Gonna be storing footage on external drives mainly, and if it's not a huge difference, would rather go with the larger old-fashioned drive and save a bunch of money)
- AMD Radeon HD 6770M graphics processor with 1GB of GDDR5 memory
- Thunderbolt RAID 8-12TB
- Thunderbolt Black Magic Ultra Studio 3D
- Apple Cinema Display (already owned)
- some kind of production monitor to go with the Black Magic
POTENTIAL IMAC 27" SET-UP
- 3.4 Ghz Quad Core i7 (8 virtual cores)
- 16GB RAM
- 2TB HDD + 256GB SSD (maybe)
- AMD Radeon HD 6970M 2GB
- Thunderbolt RAID 8-12TB
- Thunderbolt Black Magic Ultra Studio 3D
- Apple Cinema Display (already owned)
- some kind of production monitor to go with the black magic
In addition, if neither of these systems will edit RED footage well, I would consider getting something like the Sonnet PCIe Thunderbolt chassis and the Red Rocket card...but its another big expense to tack onto an already expensive machine, so I would love to know whether I could get by on either of the above without the Rocket card.
Would also consider getting a Sonnect PCIe Thunderbolt chassis and something like an NVIDIA Quadro 4000 GPU for it if people think that would help performance significantly? (with PPro CUDA)
One last question, I promise. I'm used to working on Snow Leopard and all my apps run well. If you buy a new mac, does it already come with Lion pre-installed? Or is it an optional thing? Because I would certainly rather remain on Snow Leopard, unless people can vouch that Lion runs apps and plug ins without issues already?
Thank you SO much for your help everyone!
Best,
Brian
