  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Edit... then grade... then making modifications...

Hi,

By advance sorry for that begginer question...

my workflow is simple :

Edit in Premiere > Export DPX 10bit > Reverse Assemble EDL in scratch
> Export EDL

But... whats happend if after grading some shots in Scratch, i want to change my edit, like adding a shot in the film ?
How Scratch attribute a grade to a shot ? Is that the numer ? the TC ... ?

Thx a lot !

Hi, Eric.

First of all, are you actually rendering out a DPX sequence from PPro to Scratch? Since this is reduser, am I correct in thinking that you are working with R3D? Then I would not recommend your workflow. Export EDL from PPro and conform the original R3Ds in Scratch, using reel name and TC. Or do you have a good reason not to? If not, if you change your edit later on, it´s very easy to do a new conform on your graded material with a new EDL.

Best,
Fredrik

EDIT: Just saw your other thread. You should listen to Leo, he knows what he´s talking about. Rendering DPXs out of Premiere to grade in Scratch doesn´t make sense. If you for some reason want to work with DPX files, do the conform in Scratch on the R3Ds, render DPXs (I would recommend RedLogFilm and RedColor2 in that case) and go from there...

Thx ! Thx a lot.

In fact I use PP5 to make my pan and scan because i think its more easy for me (and more fluid, and with sound, etc...)

And i'am using the 5.1 scratch version, and heard that it doesnt have the latest red mx curves ...

by the way... my shots are in red mx R3D and some MOV from a canon 7D.

To finish... is the answear of my question diferent if i am using the way you advice ? I realy want to understand ...

Eric

hmmm... no one could help me ? (i've search all the night to find the answears...)

Hi, Eric.

A reverse assemble is a "dumb" process in nature. You use the EDL to chop up a single file. So the assembler just use the rec in/out tc and doesn´t care about TC, reel names etc in the file you use.

With 5D material, you can get into TC issues when doing a regular conform. We use Grinder (http://www.redgiantsoftware.com/products/all/magic-bullet-grinder/) or 5DtoRGB (http://rarevision.com/5dtorgb/) on all DSLR files before we start editing to get proper TC for the conform.

Yes. You still export the EDL from PPro, but you do a regular conform in Scratch using TC and reel name. That makes it easy to do a re-conform when you change your edit, and still keep all the shots you already graded in the earlier versions.

If you do a reverse assemble, Scratch doesn´t relate the grading info to the original material.

On a side note, using the Source tab in the Matrix to do pan & scan should give you results that probably look better than doing scale & position in PPro. But it can get a bit hairy, especially if you try to work with the animation curves.

XML support in Scratch will solve all that. Eventually.

Cheers,
Fredrik
