  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Edit on a laptop with proxies, but have the footage processed in the camera.

There have been a few people who have mentioned the load RedCode places on a workstation.
One can edit on a laptop, but that involves sucking all the footage into the computer and using lores proxies to view the edits to the footage.
Then the laptop needs to churn through all the RedCode to generate a render.

But sitting right there next to the Laptop is a computer developed specially to process RedCode.
The CAMERA.

Why not download just the lores proxies to the laptop.
Perform edits.
Then send instructions back to the camera for processing?
Cuts, colour corrects, possibly other things such as audio edits could be accomplished within the cam?

Over Christmas I rendered out a short video of the 3D doodles I’ve been posting on the forum…

yeah, mine too. Sending things back and forth means more cables, and more time. I'm not really interested in either.

However, for future cameras, with might higher datarates and processing requirements, it might be necessary. At least until the computers catch up.

Because the camera is NOT designed to process the footage; the camera's job is to encode the wavelet and stream it to the recording medium. The designers have no doubt used the most energy efficient CPU that would get the job done, and your laptop will have a much more powerful CPU and access to useful peripherals (like big disk drives).

It is actually a very elegant solution to remove the big CPU requirement from the camera and place it into the workstation tier.

Like Bob said, camera is not designed to process footage, or at least the RED One is not and I don't see Scarlet being any different.

How do you propose to make this happen anyway and with what interface? To get meaningfully processed video out of the camera in a format that is not overly compressed, it would take a long, long time over Firewire. Honestly, I think a good quality transcode would be just as fast.

I edit footage just fine on a 2.5 year old Macbook Pro. I've cut a few commercials, some corporate pieces, two short films and one 35 minute long tradeshow piece on this 2.33GHz 15" MBP. The Adobe workflow works F'n great on this system. Even final output is do-able, but I will be honest and say that I run that through a Mac Pro or desktop PC when I can so it will go faster. But I occasionally do editing in the presence of a client and they are not always available to come to my place, nor is this always desirable as I work out of my home these days -- and have young kids. I take the MBP with me, external RAID and a 24" LCD.

By the time Scarlet ships, new computers will be quite a bit faster than they are now. Quad-core Macbook Pro systems should be available by year's end or sometime Q1 of next year. That's when I plan to upgrade the one I have now, which will be 3+ years old then.

The Red camera uses a bayer sensor. What this means is that the codec essentially encodes monochrome info via a wavelet transform. It is the debayering software that turns this raw info into RGB color space. The Camera itself does not process color info at all except in the preview output. All the luts etc are just curves attached to this data. The preview output is not a high quality debayer.

Plus who wants to have a camera tied up tethered to a laptop doing work that the laptop can do fine. I've rather have it out shooting more footage for me to play with.
