  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Economy...

Anyone here have tips on explaining the ENORMITY of RED to significant others in a way that they will jump on the train? (Buying RED Jewelry "Bling" won't work for me...not her style)

a) Pick some movie you like without many special effects (and not shot on 70mm which is still rather beyond what a RED can do), then say 'it looks this good but the camera is 1/10 the price and you don't spend money on film, thusly I can make more money with it'.

b) realize you are a camera geek, obsessed with things that the majority of people take for granted, and don't honestly care that much about. Besides, 'Electronics displace venerable analog medium at much lower cost with greater quality' is not news to most people any more. From outside the camera world, the only question about why why video doesn't compete on a level playing field with film is why it's taking so long.

Hi Jim!
May be the bailout of the Automotive industry by the Congress should be inspire by your vision and KICK-ASS approach in your industry.Get ready to give class to FORD,GM and CHRYSLER management team.

I'm not a professional, and I'm ready!

I'm not a professional, and I'm ready!

Our goal is to to make the best stuff for professionals, and continue to do so. When our professional customers can afford what we are doing... we will be ready.

Jim

I would think the professionals could not afford not to be ready for such a dramatic decrease in the cost of superior quality equipment.

As an amateur, I'd like Red to think about this question:

Is everyone who drives a $25,000 car a "Professional" driver?

I drive a 6 year old Hyundai Elantra that cost me ~$12,500, even though I could have bought a more expensive car, like many of my co-workers own. It is dented, dirty, and has a shimmy from a out-of-round wheel. I claim I get more than 75% of the functionality and reward out of it that my BMW driving co-worker gets out of her car.

With great pleasure, I have more than $12,500 sitting in my bank account waiting for the release of the Scarlet S35 (and accessories, Premier, etc.). I hope you understand that the marginal utility and the joy of documenting life it will give me is much, much more than a better car. Bring on the Scarlet. I can't wait until NAB!

So...the Knowing trailer did it! (I know there was a heafty amount of effects). She said, "Oh, I see now!" I said, "Remember when we jumped to the Canon 10D...well now digital is making feature films...without the film/processing/etc." Scarlet here I come.

I think what RED is doing at this economic situation is really great, continuing to push the boundaries and offering cameras at a very affordable price.

glad to know that RED is a wake :)

merry xmas all

Its the structure. How you guys set up your company is rendering you immune to the goings on more so than others.

We try to run our business here based on RED's arrangement and philosophy its something i've been on for ages, and when i learned and knew of RED was much more confident that it actually works.

We print no business cards, no outlet, workin on a site so we drop our phones.

It's helping.

Thanks RED, for being yourselves.

I somehow doubt RED goes without a phone, or business cards.

Their business philosophy of openness and transparency has served them well, and is very much a reflection of Jim's personality.

But the main reason Jim can go full speed ahead is that he has a small organization that probably doesn't burn a huge amount of money(*) and he has such total passion for the business, combined with his huge pile of money, that literally nothing can stop him.

(*) In relative terms. I'm sure few of us reading this could afford his payroll, but compared to his own cash hoard I am sure virtually any burn rate I would expect from his small but prime-quality staff would be sustainable more or less forever.

Apologies for the seemingly foolish comment.

Reading again I of course realize that they can't possibly go on without cards and phones, I was talking about how i'm tryin to do things here.

Lebanon's a place where the creative community is not too large, at least the actively productive ones. One has to be loaded here to afford footage, and if one receives funding, it binds the director creatively much more so than in the US or europe due to censorship, the government, and the culture that's notably different.

RED competes with other business responding to market constraints, in their case these constraints raise price of product. RED's dropped all this unnecessary cost, advertising outlets etc, and made something more accessible, and suddenly the nature of the field is not so quite as expensive as it was, we'll feel it later if they can hang (fully believing they can hang and then some of course), coz others will follow.

Beirut's small. Things are way expensive and inconvenient here, the market's run by sharks, and many students get wowed into gear lust and cash lust and it really stops you from getting your hands dirty with whatever project you've got.

HD cams go out for about 750 a day here, HDV and DV as low as 300, all this without DP and without tripods accessories glass etc.

Everyone now deems light necessary, the logic is the better the camera the more light you need. Amidst professionals even. The funder wants to see more gear to show how much he/she spent. The result is lots of the same cheap music vid, and no doors for any little filmmakers out there.

I got my hands on some LOMO Tanks, and have secured ordering S8mm film, and bought a barrage of refurbished cameras, and have priced things in a way where i can sell a roll for 25 bucks, rent the cams out for no more than 150/day (that's the nicest sync 24/25 interchangeable lens cam i got) with its glass.

Film scanning happens to dv at 50 bucks a roll, and to larger (yes even 4K I'm just happy I can do it) for more money.

I've got everyone on my facebook who's interested, and I receive bookings by sms. I don't give out cards here coz everyone's knows me by now, and my phone bill isn't really helping, not one person that booked any service in beirut did so by phone, or thanks to our ID. It's just my case the town is really that small. At least the chunk of ppl I'm interested in.

If my scans work (I'm trying two rolls this weekend to 2K) then I'm in. I can give ppl an option to have 5 min of footage for less than anyone else here, on film, using some sweet ass gear.

I really didn't think that working low key relying only on the product you offer would work, but dammit these guys are blowin me away.

All I wanted to say is that the way RED does their thing their way makes me wanna do my thing my way, and it's been workin for me.

The size factor is awesome. I agree one hundred percent. Size is so harmful here in beirut, greed's awful.

Cheers, I'm gonna try and post scans on another thread soon, I've fashioned a projector to condenser lens to capture device it works real well for dv if your cam is firewire dv. Its RGB I like it I can offer it cheap.

I'm trying this weekend to use a system (more manual but damn) using an SLR tethered to my mac, I tried on a few frames and it works, gonna try pulling an entire roll without f**king up.

The SLR is great my frames are RAWs in 12 bit if I want them to be, and using a Nikon D90 I've grabbed 3000 pix wide on each frame. The footage looks nice and responds like other footage does in AE so far.

My shutter is taken apart and the projector basically makes the think click for every frame-on-gate.

There's a dimmer on the bulb and I'm trying to turn that up while lowering ISO to minimize noise.

Cheers,

hope it takes off

Well, they are not likely to ever be a RED dealer! Nice opportunity for someone else to take away their business... :-)
