  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

(I've been glancing over this section every once in a while, but don't spend a lot of time in here, so if this specific info is elsewhere, a link would be appreciated)

This will be my first time out of the gate dealing with anything other than miniDV, so I'm hoping find most convenient, least time consuming way to post my movie.

I'll be doing EVERYTHING on my 2.33ghz MBP, so take that into consideration. For the time being, I'm really only concerned with delivering on DVD, and I assume editing in 480p will help with performance issues, but I'd like to have access to 1080p or maybe 720p versions in case I need them.

Also, while I dont see MYSELF going back to the original r3d files, I'd like to be able to reconnect to them in case someone else comes along to pay a post house to do it. (ie I don't want to screw myself because a distribution company wants the best quality 4K version, but no one can put it together because of how I chose to do my post)

If anyone can help me out I'd really appreciate it. I'll try to be more specific about things if someone asks me to.

THANKS!

What I have learned is that if you dont want to mess around with the R3D files , and just want to jump right into using the quicktime wrappers, just load your Medium wrapper up and that should give you enough resolution to edit at 480P. IF you are running Leopard, the footage probably wont playback in real time, so youll have to set your sequence playback settings to LOW. This is info I got from Kevin at RED, who deals with workflow issues, and once I got this info and tried it, it worked fine, Even on my MacBook Pro and running FCP 6.02

As far as your file management, keep your directories and filenames in tact from your original offload of the footage, and when you are done with your edit, Kick out an EDL. You can use this later to find the corresponding R3D files if they are in need of color correction attention or if you want to export a larger resolution than what the Medium QT wrapper gives you.

Hope this helps

so whats the difference between editing the wrappers and editing prores files? I was for some reason under the impression that editing with the wrapper was much more hardware intensive.

Editing with the wrapper is hardware intensive, because it decompresses the footage on the fly. Prores is a pretty muscle-y compression as well, so it does demand decent hardware.

My best advice is try several workflows until you find one you like and understand well, then do a million tests with it—from capture to DVD—until you've found all the bugs. No surprises when your cutting for real.

Hey Brandon, Please report your findings if you find a better solution. I am being slightly hard headed in that I want total control , So I go ahead and make my conversion to DVCPRO720 in RedAlert, but it takes FOREVERRRRRRRRRR! But They playback wonderfully in Leopard and in FCP more importantly.

The EDL idea is something that I am using to go back and track down the R3ds of the files I might need to boost or kick down the ISO of...

I know Crimson is the way to go , I am just trying to utilize what I have on my machine now or anything free from RED.

I still say that if you are going to use Crimson Workflow to conform at the end and you don't want to use the proxies or wait for a ProRes transcode, try transcoding in compressor to the AIC codec. On my 8 core MacPro it transcodes faster then realtime for the 1k proxies.

I am going to try this just for fun.... I have not used Compressor with ANY RED footage yet in any aspect... Thanks!

Compressor don't take .R3D-files.

just load your Medium wrapper up and that should give you enough resolution to edit at 480P.

so if i edit using 1k proxies and then i want a 1080 version, what do i do?
