  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

DYNAMIC RANGE 22 Stops

i might be wrong, but i think it's already done, extended DR and no HDRx mode on the Dragon, could be "just" in camera A/X mixing;

I don't think they would do this given the changes in motion blur A/X mixing causes. Some like it, some don't, but I can't see RED taking away the choice and forcing you into magic motion blur.

To be honest, I think a lot of these variations of HDRX induced DR should come with an astrick considering the glows around the lows that are formed when you start blending. I mean, sure, technically there's 22 stops of dynamic range here and the image looks beautiful for a stylized / more formalist piece, but this isn't the type of DR I'd want in a narrative piece when trying to imitate the human eye (where I'd guess the human eye would have 15 stops even though some have written as low as 13 or 14).

Nevertheless, amazing work for sure, Greg.

The edge glow comes from either mask feathering or tone mapping. There are other techniques that do not exhibit this characteristic. Check out my frame grabs from earlier in the thread.

You guys might check out Ginger HDR. It's a plugin for AE and Premiere. I've been working with it for quite a while and it is pretty powerful over the control you have. It does not have the ability at this point to work with dual streams from HDRX, but it works a lot like Alchemy in Red Cine X, but with a lot more control. I've been asking John the creator of Ginger HDR for dual stream support, hopefully at some point that will be made available.

I already pointed you early in this thread..

And, for the record, I am not associated in anyway with Ginger HDR, I just think that, is a good plugin.

HDR is not magical by itself either, is a matter of trial and error.

One more thing that I would like to point here is that, you should light the scene properly too.

If you haven't noticed on the grab above, the woman's computer screen is acting as a soft light for her face..

But the main thing is that I don't see much blown highlights on the scene, considering the complexity of the shot..

This is the the best result I've gotten from Photomatix to date: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tGf9s_s9Kzg

Definitely great for a commercial look... motion blur is often an issue though. Not sure yet if I'll be able to use it in a narrative setting, since I'm on Scarlet I don't want to risk going to 3k for no benefit if it doesn't work. Some of the tone mapping settings flicker more than others, and it's handy to have a way of removing that. A REDCINE-X mode could probably include the reduction, or better yet avoid any frame-to-frame changes entirely.

That's the problem with software made for stills and using it with motion, it tends to flicker, otherwise looks like lots of possibilities for that kind of dynamic range. Just a shame there is currently no production worthy workflow for working with it. My fingers are crossed though.

I particularly like to tweak a bit more, in order to makes it look more natural, like in real life, no so surreal. (don't know if its the right word..)
Photomatix has several options for that.
Also, I noticed that HDR for some reason adds too much saturation to the final composite. (which can be easily corrected though), and as I said before, light the interiors if you can, in order to get the most on post.

HDRX is great, but not available in SYNC mode, so not available in S3D shot.

It can be done guys.. I found these tutorials sometime ago.. Best approach ever..

This is the short version..

This is the long version..
