I am working on a feature and trying to create dailies in a timely fashion. Many subscribers on this site suggest converting the 1K reference files and importing them all into DVDSP. While I can easily convert the reference files to the appropriate DVD codec, I'm not sure on how to create a DVD with chapters without first using FCP. This is how I currently create dailies, by using FCP and creating markers between each clip, then exporting to Compressor before finally going to DVDSP. But the rendering in FCP can take many hours. Again, I can use compressor just fine, but I have no idea how all of those clips are imported into DVDSP to create one large timeline with chapters. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

there is a timeline within DVDSP where you can right click to create chapter markers I believe.

Make the markers in Final Cut Pro, hit 'M' once, then hit 'M' again without moving the playhead. 'Add Chapter Marker' will translate into DVD Studio Pro.

Been doing it everyday on features for Dailies, My 'Window Burn' SD DVD's take real-time for _P.

Also you can make Chapters in DVD Studio pro by clicking in the gray area directly above the Timeline, one is for playhead... The one above that is for Chapter Markers

Trying to Avoid Final Cut Pro

Trying to Avoid Final Cut Pro

This however is what I am trying to avoid. I would like to bypass Final Cut Pro and go straight to Compressor and then to DVDSP. Again, Final Cut Pro takes way to long to render before I can even get to compressor where I have to render once again. I can already compress the files in Compressor just fine, it's just creating the DVD menu with chapter markers that I'm unsure of. I can import the .m2v files into the DVDSP timeline, and even add chapters. But I have know idea how to then apply that timeline to the DVD menu along with all of the appropriate chapter menus. I've read about other workflows that automatically do all of this for you, but none of these posts detail how this is actually pulled off.

You have to render in FCP?

Since when?

FCP takes just as long as Compressor, because Compressor does ALL the work. NEVER let FCP render, thats retarded... Send it straight to compressor,

Wait... I see what your trying to do, you have to have a button on a menu that targets a Track...

BTW: I use FCP to render out in Realtime to M2v, I've never had an issue and I never include a Menu, especially with Dailies. Just Right click on the track to make it First Play, unless you have separate days on one DVD...

Still Trying to Avoid Final Cut Pro

Still Trying to Avoid Final Cut Pro

x86box, I appreciate the input. I would still like to skip FCP, because exporting a FCP timeline directly into compressor does not allow me to take advantage of more than one core on my 3Ghz dual quadcore MacPro. If I import all of the _m reference files into compressor I can access 4 cores and the compression time is MUCH faster. There are several threads involving a Compressor/DVDSP workflow for dailies that is almost entirely automated. But I can't find a detailed explanation of how this accomplished.

Have you tried to export from FCP to Compressor and watched only one core being used? I never have, Or is this heresay? I work with FCP all day, doing dailies everyday, I use compressor everytime, on every core, from FCP. Tried, tested, and True, for the last 4 features, never a complaint.

20 minutes of footage takes 20 minutes, It can get better but does it need to? Typically we shoot 90 minutes a Day, that 90 minutes takes 90 minutes to compress WITH Timecode! I'm On set right now Compressing Dailies as they come off the camera, so all the dailies are done before we even wrap.

Do you watch the Activity Monitor or Use Menu Meters? How do you know its only using one Core? Thats completely untrue.

You won't find a detailed explanation here, this is not a FCP tutorial Website, You can find tutorials on how to use FCP, compressor, and DVDSP on other sites.

M or P

M or P

Are you using the M or P reference files? I've been working with the M reference files because the P files resolution is smaller than 720x480. Could this be why your compression takes place in real time? If so, have you compared the quality of a DVD created with 1/2k files vs. 1k files? I would think you'd see a noticeable difference, and even though we're talking about dailies, I still think quality is important. Also, do you export into compressor a final cut pro file or quicktime reference file?

Have you simply dragged clips one after another into a single track in DVDSP? Keep in mind this forces a recompress- so I wouldn't recommend it.

I use the _P because Dailies suck... I stretch them to 720x480, b/c with Window Burn they take real-time. I also take High-res Tifs and hand those to Director & EP, & Producers, so they see how the images really look. Dailies dont have to look good, and the Tifs are unbelieveable, Dailies are quick and crappy. Thats the point, QUICK. I'm on a Quad too, not an 8-core.

Unless you re-create every proxy in RedAlert!, the Dailies won't look good anyway...

I just line everything up in a DV Timeline, and export using Compressor. So basically a FCP .xml to compressor. Very simple and VERY effective. I put chapter markers after every take, so Director can skip and go back easily.

How are you compressing these? From an e-sata RAID or single internal Drive? I hope you aren't doing these from a old FW800 drive.

Not only that, it causes heaps of problems. Just don't, DVDSP is not an Editor for MPEG.
