Hello all,

I need to make DVDs of a rough cut of a film shot 4K, 2to1 on Red.

We are editing in FCP from the quicktimes.

Is there a way to make DVD's that preserve the aspect ratio?

Thanks
DAN

Hey Dan,

DVDs can only be 16x9 or 4x3 so you will need to make a letterbox 2:1 within a 16:9 space in Final Cut.

Just make a 16x9 sequence and FCP should do this for you automatically when you drop the footage in.

Hope this helps!

Jim

Standard-Def DVD provides for only two aspect ratios "natively": 4:3 and 16:9. Any other aspect ratio involves adding black bars to the edges of the encoded frame (letterbox or pillarbox).

That's assuming you want to generate standard DVD. Nothing prevents you from encoding a DVD with some other pixel aspect ratio (2:1, 2.4:1 etc while still using the full 720x480 NTSC frame), but it would look wrong (stretched or squeezed) on normal playback sets.
