Hi, I need to output to firewire for playback...is there any easy way of doing this? thanks

sorry, thought this was a forum about the red....from Red to....firewire...which means I want to capture a signal to record playback...actually I want the signal to feed into my laptop (mac) so I can record takes (just for a rough cut, not high res).

No Firewire on the Red, you need something to capture HD-SDI like AJA IOHD, or matrox MXO2 or the new blackmagic H.264 Pro Recorder (maybe the cheapest solution, but haven´t used it yet)

There is no reason or need to capture. I'm not sure I understand the want/need for DV format, but you can transcode out of REDCINE-X to whatever format you need -- even if it's DV. You can also work off the low-res P or M camera proxies. But a 1/8th resolution debayer out to DV or QT Proxy format is faster than real-time on most any decent system and should be a lot easier than recording the HD feed into another expensive device. It will also preserve timecode and will be easy to sync with full res footage later.

Really ?????

I wanted to do that a while back (on Windows) but couldn't see that as an output option.

Or do you just mean "DV resolution" i.e. "SD resolution" ????

I edit while I shoot: live, so I need a fast capture situation. I edit as fast as the take. I don't slow down the shoot with import, etc. So I need to capture on the fly. Thus my editing programs only capture live with Firewire. So yes, I need a firewire output.

DV needs a container file and it depends on which codecs are installed on your system. You should be able to choose Windows Media or AVI and have DV be your internal codec. But really, I have no idea why you would want or need this unless you intend to output back to a DV tape...?

Interesting... But I think you will find it increasingly hard to work in that way with most new cameras. DV is over, HDV is on its deathbed. Every camera I have purchased this year comes without the ability to do [H]DV and all but one don't even have a firewire port. Everything is AVCHD now and offloads via memory card or USB2. You may just have to accept that your workflow might have to adjust for the wait time to copy your files over. There are other recording solutions out there, but no one is producing anything new for [H]DV. RED will have a proxy module for Epic/Scarlet that generates H.264 clips in real time and they can be sent wirelessly, live. So you could shoot and have them automatically loaded in your bin as soon as you stop recording and they post.

I believe there are other similar solutions on the market now that can take HD-SDI inputs or HDMI input.

Realistically, you're best bet is using a good capture device or capture card. AJA / BlackMagic card, AJA IO/HD, matrox MXO2, etc.. Instead of connecting a firewire, you would connect a high-grade coax cable which operates at much greater lengths, and sends uncompressed HD too. And you can capture the same way you would DV. Dump right into a 480p format if you like. The ProRes Proxy format is excellent for such purposes.

If you are doing live editing with Firewire, using the system I think you probably are (capturing multiple streams through multiple cards and effectively doing a live 'line edit' while also storing the original data in separate streams for later changes, kind of like a poor mans Outside Broadcast EVS system) there would be a way to do this.

You would need to downconvert from the Red to SD Video - a Blackmagic Mini Converter (sdi to component) would do this. You would then feed the output of that mini converter into an ADAC device to convert the SD to a firewire stream on the fly, and then run that into your system.

Seems like it would be a complete waste of the RED ONE's potential, but assuming you needed to know how to do this within your existing workflow for say, a one off job, it could be done with a couple of pieces of additional gear.

How robust that whole daisy change of devices would be is another matter altogether - but it certainly wouldn't be impossible.

Yikes, Stuart, the question was how could it be done in an easy way: not if the Red does it. It can be done in several ways, I'm looking for simple solutions.
