Duplicate clips due to fat32 partitioning; how to manage the files?

Hi guys, worked on a project and it was the first time I had the financial resources to hire a DP/Op with a Red Camera.

I just noticed today (a week after the shoot) that the camera split some of the clips that went over 4 GB. I understand that is how fat32 partitioning works with cameras. My old HVX200 did the same when shot to P2 cards.

I am editing the project and am wondering what is the best way to ingest the footage. I first dragged and dropped the folders (which are separated by folders for each time we dumped drives) and started cutting then noticed today that there are duplicate videos but the file sizes differ.

A006_C001_0314WG_001.R3D
A006_C001_0314WG_002.R3D

I preview both clips using RED PLAYER and the TRT is the same for both.

My question is, is it ok to only import files that end in 001 to use as source files or is there a way to easily merge the clips into one .R3D file.

Thanks in advanced.

What NLE are you using? When using Premiere Pro, the best way to ingest .r3d files is using the media browser. Premiere will detect the clips automatically as one file. If you drag and drop, it will split the files up into individual clips.

They aren't duplicates! You need every part to have the whole clip, so do NOT delete any of them. Treat the folder containing them as one clip.

As Tony says, any program that recognises R3D files should treat all the parts as a single clip, but often only if you import via the program's own media browser (i.e. not be dragging & dropping from Finder).

I would suggest not dragging and dropping. Use a copy program like Shotput Pro, DoubleData, Offload, etc. And, BTW, NEVER change the names!!

PP CS6

When I dumped the footage onto a Lacie, i created a new folder for each card dump.

When I got home, i copied ONLY the r3d's into separate folders so i only have the r3d and not their container folders.

When I use media browser to import just the r3d files, it would import the three files (001, 002, 003) individually.

Should I have kept the files in their original container folders and then import using media browser?
(I am at work right now so I cant test the theory until tonight)

Thanks. It sounds like I should of kept the "split clips" in their original RDC folder and imported the folder using media browser!

I will try that when I get home!

thanks

Obviously don't delete the clips on the hard drive but you can safely delete the multiple iterations in premiere. If you use media browser to import and manually select each clip (first partition) then it will import correctly. But if you take the quicker route of importing your footage folder en made then you'll get the additional iteration. The clue is if they come in as a folder then the clip was partitioned. It's simplest to go through and delete the duplicates after import. I wish Adobe would fix this. It's been pointed out to them repeatedly.

Thanks Hal. I did exactly that last night. I replaced anything on the sequence that was using the "002, 003" files with the "001" file and then removed it from the bin in premiere.

Im going to see if importing the root folder of each clip will change anything.

Update: I put the r3d files back into their respective folders and media browser sees shots with multiple clips as one!

Thanks!
