  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Dumb PL mount will be $500

If you can spring for PL lenses, I don't think a $500 mount will put a dent into your checkbook.

I will be saving for 2 angi zooms converted to pl, maybe 3000 total for both lenses plus the conversions. I realize that 500 isnt that much considering the cost of those lenses, or the fact I could rent insanely good glass to use on my camera.

I'm just surprised a dumb mount costs as much as the smart ones. Also, I didnt think I was going to have to pay for a mount. I unfortunately misunderstood something Jarred said a long time ago about the pl mount being standard, but didn't realize that he was talking about s35 and epix x. So that was my fault.

The good thing though is that if the mini-PL didnt come standard I don't think I would have ever sprung for it and the mini primes which I plan on doing down the road now because I will already have the mount

Just on a general note,

It appears that you are quoting from a private message Jarred sent to you. It is not very ethical to publicize private messages without the sender's consent.

500 for a quality mount is a bargain. Remember, those are low volume, extremely low tolerance, high quality items.

That's not much at all.

It's funny because one of my lenses is an Arri Standard Mount, so I guess I'll have to get a AS to PL adapter, then this PL mount to use some of the lenses I have.

I expect the PL mount won't be so dumb. It should support the i-pins for lens meta data at least.

Does anybody know the flange focal distance of the new mini-PL mount? It would be great if you could make an adapter from mini-PL to regular PL so you don't have to switch the whole mount if you want to use a PL-mount lens.

At $500, that's the least expensive PL mount I know in the industry.

The spec on the Mini-PL mount is not public, but I suspect it may be too physically small to allow for PL lenses to properly fit. Most PL lenses protrude at least a bit behind the mount flange through a collar. That collar may be too wide for the Mini-PL.

$500 is indeed a pretty good price for the very precise machining needed for a proper PL mount. I suspect the OP is more confused that the electronic mounts aren't more. However, presumably the "smarts" of the RED electronic mounts (i.e. the smart part that exist on a circuit board inside a birger EOS mount) are already inside the Epic/Scarlet brains and I think I have seen somewhere an epic with no front on it that shows there are spring loaded contacts there also (to allow communication with any of the various mounts) so the Nikon, Canon, etc. mounts really just require the appropriate contacts.

Since the bayonet parts for Canon and Nikon are made in huge volumes (you can buy an original Nikon K3 bayonet for 19.95 retail) that cost isn't very high but you also have the new locking mechanism to offset it, which probably needs similar precision to a pl mount. So overall the costs are in the same ballpark and so it made sense to price them all the same.

(all this is total speculation on my part)

As I understand it, there is both a dumb PL mount and an electronic PL mount that supports ARRI LDS and Cooke /i interfaces.

$500 seems pretty darn reasonable for a PL mount.

I guess it begs the question as to why even bother with a dumb PL mount then. Just use a smart one with the data switched off. Not even worth it for RED to manufacture, unless they just didn't bother to physically attach the leads on the contacts. More of an inventory control issue than it's worth.
