I have the set, they're awesome.

For "vintage" lenses they are very clean and being APO have almost no chromatic aberration. I actually used them to shoot some extra VFX elements for the upcoming Daniel Radcliffe Weird Al movie because the lack of CA just makes things so much easier for VFX.

I also then liked the flares so much I shot some lens flare elements for the film with them too.

Don't get me wrong: these were just additional elements for VFX for a scene... but hey, they held up.

The one thing I disagree with in the article is they don't really bloom that much. They have veiling flare, yes, but that's not the same thing. Wide open they are still clean and sharp in the center without weird funky blooming.

I'm looking forward to wider than 31mm but in the meantime am enjoying using some old wide angle adapters on 'em.

If anyone wants to rent, ping me - I'm in Los Angeles - boacinema (at) gmail (dot) com

Bruce,

Thanks for your input from your experience with these lenses ! I have heard alot about them in the past and just wanted to know more about them from someone whom have actually used them.

These look cool. The old Cooke S2/S3s (except maybe the retrofocus designs) I think are apo too and look great to me.

What wide angle converters have you found to be any good? More for full frame wide lenses that aren't wide enough for S35 coverage actually. For 72mm and 52mm front threads. Thanks!

Yes exactly - my buddy who rented them for a commercial made the Cooke comparison too!

RE: wide adapters... I'll post some tests the moment I have time.

Thanks! I had this crazy idea that putting the old Scoopic wide angle converter/aspheron on a 24mm f1.4 FD L would turn it into an 18mm K35 somehow. You'd also need a macro tube probably.

Was also looking for a way to convert the 24mm f2.0 Nikkor to 17mm or 18mm f2.0 to complete a set (17, 24, 35, 50, 85).

And someone to convert the 35mm f1.4 Minolta to FD mount without a full rehousing.

Reason being.... I'm still (primarily) living in S35 land.

But this stuff would be so DIY I think just having an nFD set of inconsistent speed is the way for me to go. But I'm still curious.
