I have an 5" pro red monitor on a epic w, but I like to have one extra monitor onboard the camera that is set to 1:1 for focusing. Would be very kind if you can post an image of your dual monitor setup. Im interesting wich monitors you are using. Do you skip red monitors altogether and use other brands? Im set to order a new monitor on Monday next week that is high bright of atleast 1500nits. It seams like Atomos Shogun Inferno is still the best option. Just wish it was less plastic. I do like there approach to HDR, wich Is one of the reasons I want this monitor.

So the plan is to use the 5" red pro monitor for composing and view the menu (95% I use the side handle to brows the menus). The shogun inferno would be set at 1:1 and perhaps some tool for enhance the focus viewing. Im not sure if you could dubble tap the shogun and jump between full view and 1:1, but if you can and its fast I will doing this and view the full image while setting the exposure using the Atomos Hdr tools.

Perhaps some recommend to get the Atomos 7" and one of there 5" to swap out the red pro 5" monitor as its so low resolution and so dull.

Dont forget to post your dual "onboard" monitor pics.
Also what arms are you recommending for mount the monitors to your camera.

I use a 4.7" Red monitor for some monitoring and control over my brain, and use either a Convergent Design Odyssey 7q+ to primarily use for monitoring for indoors or a Atomos Shogun/or Ninja Flame (whichever I grab before I leave home) for outdoors. Problem is with either you are limited to the HD signal coming out of the camera, so you won't really get a 1:1 for focusing. With the Atomos there's a small button that appears in the bottom right of the screen to take the 1:1 or 2:1 off.

As far as arms I used to use the Noga CineArm large, but I recently picked up the Bright Tangerine Titan Arm and love it-wish I picked it up sooner!

Thanks, cant you output one feed 1:1 to hd-sdi and keep fullscreen on the red monitor? I have not tried this but i was hoping you could. Yea its strange that red still only manage to output in 1080 while simple mirrorless cameras can output 4k over hdmi. I mean red always been number one in pushing resolution, so why not also for monitoring aswell?

RED does so many things so well, but the lack of 1:1 or 4K monitoring of the signal, as a simultaneous monitoring option while recording, is just baffling. The 4k broadcast module is not the answer I'm looking for.

I would highly recommend using the EDGE FOCUS mode on the 5" monitor, and then framing with whatever monitor you like best lol.

The edge focus mode is effective enough to be viewed from somewhat far away, and can be restricted to just the touch screen. So your SDI feed can remain clean (and you don't have to deal with that magnification issue)

I just use TV LOGIC 058W for focus and color. Set the aperture to something more than 8, and you're good to go. They have a new OLED one (055A), which is even better (does not overheat, better overall brightness and so on).

The reason this is the case is due to RED's proprietary mini-mag format. If you allow someone to output 4K to a monitor, they can also capture 4K to a cheap memory format.

I'm not troubled by mini-mags or the proprietary nature since there are so few stories of people having memory fail, but it's also going to restrict things down the line in terms of support accessories like focus monitoring resolution.

It does not sound like red to criple the cameras just for the sake of it but it can of course be true. But monitor 8k in 1080 does not feel right for critical focus. I want to avoid toggle 1:1 evry time I set focus. It must be a way ro view full screen and 1:1 at the same time on two monitors!

1:1 on the red is activated by actually changing the resolution to 1080 BTW. Hense why you can do that while shooting.

Bob did you mean that the camera crops the sensor down to 1080, and thats why you cant record at the same time?

One thing to notice is that the camera crops in more than 1080 when susing the low rez red pro 5”. At the same time you can go out with hdmi to a 1080 monitor and se the 1080 crop on the telivision. So i think it should be possible to view full screen on one monitor and 1080 on another.
