  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

DSMC2. Unified.

I think when the dust settles you will find this move was just the one to get people to think about putting in an order for a backup camera, second sensor camera. I almost don't want to upgrade to Gemini but instead just focus on the work and buy one outright. Upgrading from an Epic-W to Weapon frame rates for the cost presented is a blessing. Enough of a blessing to budget for picking up that next body when the time comes. A lot of negativity up on here today. Some from the same people which has become nauseating to read (actually over the years). I get it though. But just know some of us out here while we may not post often are very much feeling no matter how you approached this you would have polarized reactions but at the end of the day this is a business decision. We understand you are not running a charity as much as you want to have cameras in the hands of everyone.

True, but this is also basically a charity.

So help me out here everyone. I feel like I just got my pants pulled around my ankles on this one. We own two Helium 8k cameras. Literally just bought another 5 weeks ago. Now these damn things are only worth 24,500 when I just paid 50k. What the hell gives for those of us who paid top dollar to invest in the best camera possible at the time? I understand how great this is for all of you with Epic-W and such but how does my 50k camera drop in half overnight. I paid 50k 5 weeks ago for a camera and want to upgrade to Monstro but now that is going to cost me a small fortune. Makes no sense what so ever! Maybe I am missing something but for those of us who invested the most seem to get absolutely nothing in return. Please tell me I am wrong!

Can't agree more Corey. I specifically went for the CF Weapon as this was at the time promised to be the top tier camera for future upgrade paths, but the camera's value is now the hardest hit (percentage wise) by unification. I'm dead keen on the Monstro, but the 30k was a big stretch, and I had to wait until a Nikon VV mount was released before being able to upgrade anyway. This mount is still unavailable as far as I could see, so pointless going that route and making use of the 30k special while sensor stocks last, meaning I will probably lose out on that as well and have to spend 40k one day on an upgrade. I know there will be hundreds individual outcomes like these that could not be foreseen but that is just my 2c (or 25k)

Congrats to everyone else upgrading their bodies, I'm sure you will enjoy them but this is really not the best news ever for those who invested in Red's top models

DUDE, No one does. Have the luxury.

If you are a "film college student," did they not teach you anything about cameras or lenses or THE NOW compared to 10 years ago, 5, one? Your camera should cost more than it did. Maybe Black magic is more your speed? Something lost 1/5th its value after ONE MONTH, a piece of technology / camera gear.... please, take some other classes at school, business, life, because man if this is your complaint you got some big damn surprises in the real world.

Of course I know. I owned bunch of cameras from DSLRs, FS700, FS5 to FS7II. I bought the camera with an understanding that my camera will depreciate. I am definitely ok with that. I was also aware of the fact that RED releases new product very frequently. I am actually a economics double major, and I did my research on RED, so I perfectly understood what I was getting into. It is just no one expects to experience 1/5 price drop when you just purchased a camera that was released 4 weeks ago.

Sweet. And is there a way for us to know just about where we are in queue? I submitted my request probably 10 mins after the news dropped, never received confirmation, however.

Michael, no, we don't publish the queue list. Once you get contacted to select an upgrade window, you will know your timing.

Check my prior posts on request confirmations....

You CF Weapon owners don't sweat it.. I know you guys are holding the bag right now, Give Brent and I a few days we are working on something.

Not sweating at all, you guys always come through in the end for your Red army.

I just love how your still supporting upgrade paths for owners with DSMC1 Dragon bodies, that is just beyond loyal dude. Good on you!

Damn, what the hell are students making these days for you to go through multiple cameras like that? !

I busted my butt with a 5D for two years shooting weddings and random events so I could make rent and grub money and save up for a Scarlet M-X, and that was at a battle-tested price!

I believe that it is just expensive schools like NYU, USC, etc. Most student DPs in school owns high end cameras, such as Alexa Mini and Alexa SXT Plus. In an environment where it is the norm for student DPs to have his/her own equipment, not owning a camera acts as a huge disadvantage.

The only free Gemini version, is for “Epic-W GEMINI” owners. They get their Gemini Epic-W brain internals upgraded to Weapon spec for free.

Yeah, got that.
Makes my decision even easier: Dsmc2 Helium all the way. Or just stick with EpicW-H and upgrade later to Monstro.

Just wanted to express gratitude, I've been on the ride since Red One, I have complete faith that there will be a fair solution.

No advantage for Gemini owners -.- just a 5K price drop for a four week old cam.

Is it really 2 year warranty for new DSMC2 body?

So... onto the good stuff.

For Gemini...

$12,500 for an upgrade from Scarlet-W to DSMC2 Gemini.

$14,500 for an upgrade from DSMC1 Dragon cameras to DSMC2 Gemini.

$4,950 to upgrade Epic-W internals to the new unified DSMC2 ( Weapon class ) brain.

All new cameras will have price adjustments as well.

I know I probably just bored half of you all with way too much behind the scenes info so here you can skip to the new plan in detail :

Hi
Im the owner of a a Dragon Weapon 6K Mg body. I am a loyal customer, first started by buying Scarlet MX kit. Then I went on Upgrading from Scarlet Mx to Epic X, then from Epic to Dragon 6k then from Dragon to DMSC 2 weapon Dragon 6K. All these upgrades were pricy but great to me. Right now I feel a bit left over since there are now current update to Helium or Gemini. I've contacted my red bomb squad, but he doesn't know when this specific upgrade will be available.
Someone at RED can help sort this out please ? Thanks

No way. This is a product of going to NYU where a vast majority of students are being financially backed by their folks.

You are right! Maybe it is just NYU.

Honestly, man, your work is really cool, especially your black and white photography. If no one else has said it to you, I will - you don't need to buy more gear to "keep up" with anyone. You have a good eye, and that's more important than having high-end gear and lenses. Make what you have work, and the right people will find you.

Aside from the fact you can upgrade to WEAPON-class board sets at no additional cost. Which opens up the ability to go into above-S35 sized sensors like MONSTRO, which was not possible before without upgrading to WEAPON.
