  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

DSMC2. Unified.

If I upgrade my Weapon Helium to dsmc2 Monstro do I keep my CF body or do I requested a new dsmc2 CF body? and can we also request a dsmc2 Stealth Badge? if thats not an option can I keep my stealth badge?

You keep your carbon fiber. The coin will be replaced as is it no longer a "Weapon", technically.

But, I can see about including your old stealth coin back in the box. Ping me before you send in for upgrade...

Brent - just curious does this go in the order the trade in requests were received? When can we expect a date to be announced as to when we start moving on this? Just trying to plan some projects around it (obviously understand things could change though )

Ok great. As far as the coin, that makes total sense, will you be offering a stealth dsmc2 coin option? I hope you guys do or consider it. I Love how the stealth coin looks.

I think most of us are spoiled by RED and we get unappreciative when things don't go our way. People who buy into other camera ecosystems never even get the same upgrade opportunities we, as a RED family, get.

Yea, RED's in the business to make money, but honestly, I feel like I'm part of the family, they're looking out for me - the customer, and that goes a long way. You just don't find Presidents/CEO's of other companies, of any kind, on forums, generating a dialogue between the top of the company, and it's customer base. It just doesn't happen guys.

RED will always be innovating...and we don't want them to stop, since they are the main architect paving our industry. So asking them to stop innovating/making newer/greater cameras isn't good, for any of us.

What devalues RED cameras more than anything? People who hate on RED for doing what they do best. Being themselves.

So never take things for granted, i.e. RED camera upgrades or lack their of, because they could vanish in a heartbeat.

And remember, no one is forcing you to upgrade/downgrade/crossgrade your camera, that's just your inner gut telling you it's just to darn good of a deal to pass up!

Thanks Sir!

Depends on what you are upgrading to. Should have some good clarity on most paths in the coming few weeks....

No, one of the benefits of this is greater simplicity. Two coins, just another variable. More variables = More cost.

Remember, the only reason Jarred offered the stealth was when people objected to the term "WEAPON." With DSMC2, that should not be an issue....

Yup, I can understand that. Thanks Brent.

Well, people should remember: I haven't seen too many upgrade offers from Arri, Canon, Panasonic, or Sony, and they release new cameras all the time. So put this in perspective. Time goes on, stuff gets cheaper/better, old stuff gets devalued, and that's technology.

These upgrades start next month. Of course, depends where you are in queue (going in order of upgrade request received to schedule).

Sweet. And is there a way for us to know just about where we are in queue? I submitted my request probably 10 mins after the news dropped, never received confirmation, however.

So help me out here everyone. I feel like I just got my pants pulled around my ankles on this one. We own two Helium 8k cameras. Literally just bought another 5 weeks ago. Now these damn things are only worth 24,500 when I just paid 50k. What the hell gives for those of us who paid top dollar to invest in the best camera possible at the time? I understand how great this is for all of you with Epic-W and such but how does my 50k camera drop in half overnight. I paid 50k 5 weeks ago for a camera and want to upgrade to Monstro but now that is going to cost me a small fortune. Makes no sense what so ever! Maybe I am missing something but for those of us who invested the most seem to get absolutely nothing in return. Please tell me I am wrong!

Arguably a college student shouldn't be buying an Epic W Gemini, focus on your studies, use the college's equipment to the max, maaaaybe own a personal camera such as a cheap GH5S (or heck, a GH2! Then you really will not care about depreciation while you study until you graduate).

I respectfully disagree. In NYU, most of the student DPs have their own camera, such as Alexa Mini and Alexa SXT Plus. In an environment where most student DPs have their own camera, not having your camera acts as a huge disadvantage.

Love that you have 50k to toss about. Pants around your ankles? Sounds like you know what thats like... :blush2:

U should be out shooting.

I've learned from being a RED owner over the years and hope I can lend some advice for those that are like me.

1. Jump on the good deals when you see something that works for you. For example, I couldn't afford an Epic MX, yet they cut the price in half and I could jump in. If you can't swing it don't do it.
2. Honestly don't upgrade if you can't afford it. Really look at the value of what you have. The upgrades are awesome but if you can't afford it, it turns into a rabbit hole you will constantly be digging to keep up with.
3. The top tier doesn't make sense unless you can really afford it and you have the work for it. Just don't do it if you're going to be hemorrhaging money and opening loans.
4. Get the low end gear and be able to afford using it. Get a Raven, its really all I need and most of us need. Then you have all the accessories for the big projects when they come along and all you need to do is rent the body.
5. Seriously just sit back and watch. Upgrading and trying to keep up is an endless money stream that only makes sense for a few. Just look at the frustration from those trying to keep up.

They're great cameras but RED moves as fast or faster than other companies. Wait for it to be a fit for you.

Thank you for your reply.

I know that the upgrade from Epic-W Gemini to DSMC2 Gemini is FREE but it is basically the same camera except better data rates. I am losing $5k as I could have saved $5k if i purchased the camera today instead.

Don't get me wrong. I love my Gemini to death. It is an amazing camera. But it is just unfair for a product to cost 1/5 less 4 weeks after it's initial release. The camera that costed $25k for me to purchase now costs $20k brand new.

I purchased the camera with an understanding that it may lose value 6 months after it's release. I did my research and I knew RED may release a new sensor 6 months later and my camera would drop in value. I would not feel bad at all if that was the case.

However, I never expected my camera to lose value 4 weeks after it's initial release.

I know technology advances fast and products depreciates but depreciating by 1/5 of the retail price 4 weeks after it's initial release is unfair to the early Gemini buyers.

Being a college student, I don't have the luxury of not caring about wasting $5k.

DUDE, No one does. Have the luxury.

If you are a "film college student," did they not teach you anything about cameras or lenses or THE NOW compared to 10 years ago, 5, one? Your camera should cost more than it did. Maybe Black magic is more your speed? Something lost 1/5th its value after ONE MONTH, a piece of technology / camera gear.... please, take some other classes at school, business, life, because man if this is your complaint you got some big damn surprises in the real world.

I agree that Unified body sounds great in the long run.

However, having bought a Epic W Gemini 4 weeks ago, immediately after it's release, I can not be happy that I could have saved $5k If I prolonged the purchase until today.

It is unfair that the camera that was released 4 weeks ago just had a $5k price drop. I am only a NYU college student, and having wasted $5k is a big deal for me.

Did you ask Red about their education discount?
