  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

DSMC2 Speedboster for everyone!

Here is a great review of the quality of the speedbooster:

Skip to 12:40 for his notes on the Vello Speedbooster.
As have been mentioned by others regarding speedboosters, we do degrade the image a bit by adding more optics to the equation - but this can be fixed by stopping down your lens ofcourse. We loose the DOF but get the FOV of FF 35mm. Since you gain a stop of light we can easily stop down the lens a stop.

Jacek I would be interested!
It would even be better if you can provide the whole thing done (including the speedbooster already mounted with the olpf etc...)

Thank you guys!!
The plan is to provide complete solution that contains the OLPF caddy wit hSB optic built in and the custom lens mount. Nikon, Canon EF or PL. The mounts will be swappable so any of the three can be used with the said OLPF SB caddy.
Maz are you in for DSMC 1 or 2?

I also made a DIY speedbooster based on Miller's design. What i found out is it approximately mimics 80mm lens to 66 / 50mm to 40 / 30 to 24mm lens and gaining 1 stop.

But in a real world scenarios i use it for only artistic looks because of the lack of sharpness. For example 50mm sigma art at f1.4 is much more sharper than same lens at f2 with a speedbooster. so if you need more light you open the iris but lose lots of detail below f2.

So what i see is using a speedboster with 50mm sigma art lens is not a better choice than using a 35mm sigma art lens without speedbooster which you can use at f1.4 without sacrificing image quality.

Even so it gives image a great feel on personal projects and gerilla shoots at night are working great with the booster.

these were shot in London with diy speedbooster on Helium with 24 and 50mm sigma art lenses.

I think that this is the prime example why this needs to be done right.
Theoretically the speed booster should improve the image quality since it is optically compressing the image into a smaller circle. In reality however the image quality remains the same (with and without the speed booster optics for any given lens) because of the "universal" design specs of the speed booster optics that makes it compatible with many lenses. Degrading image quality would either point at poor quality of the optics or poor/imprecise placement of the speed booster. From experience I would guess it is a little of both. I always say: there are hundred ways to screw up the lens but only one to do it right -the one intended by the designer. Guess what we will see more of....

Since i already printed these 10 kits and most of you want a solid proffesional solution - I lowered the price for these to $150 including shipping.
So that is a total of $350 for a speedbooster-''toy'' for your DSMC2.

Do you find the Sigma Art 50mm usuable at T1.5? I was bothered by some strong blue fringe at sharp transition. It was perhaps my lens? Do you have any T1.5 R3D samples to show?

Thanks

Pat

I wouldnt miss this if i havent done one for myself. It takes too many hours trying and failing until you make one that actually works. So i think anyone interested in speedboosters should consider this offer.

I first recognised it in a shoot that needed to show contrasty texture. And was fine at f2 i think. I am out of town right now but can share same samples in couple of days.
