Hey gang,

Just got my DSMC2 side handle in from RED. Took off the side plate and installed the module, bolted all the screws in, and everything looks and feels flush with the body.

For some reason all the functions of the side handle aren't working once I power on my Scarlet-W.

Am I missing something? Is there something I need to set up and engage once installed? Or should it just be working right out of the gate? It doesn't come with any instructions, and I haven't seen any documentation online regarding usage of the unit.

I'm Running the latest firmware for S-W.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

i had a similar issue this morning with my Scarletw. But when i removed the lens, which was a GDU 40mm, and rebooted the camera, then put the lens on, all was working correctly. it seems to be an issue with mine when i have an electronic lens on during the boot cycle.
i'll be sure to report it when time permits

Richie, I'm using a Sigma ART 18-35mm and tried detaching, reboot, and reattach as you suggested. Side handle still not functioning.

Chad, I just ran the Hardware Rediscovery function and rebooted the s-w brain. Side handle functions still a no go. Interestingly enough, when I head into the "attached modules" menu it only lists the Canon Lens Mount and V-Mount Expander. I might just have a faulty unit?

Either way I'll contact support to see if they can help me sort this out.

Thank you both for the suggestions and input. I love this place!

Hey guys I got my Side Handle a few days ago, I installed it while the camera was powered down with a Leica M mount on the camera. When I booted the camera up for the first time with the side handle it went through an install for it and since then has been working with full functionality.

Richie I'm very curious to hear how the focusing works with the side handle and the GDU lenses. I've had very mixed results with my Sigma 18-35, sometimes the focusing with side handle works beautifully like a charm, and then sometimes it glitches out and has "focus slip" and even gets lost and stuck until I adjust focus manually from the lens to make focusing from the side handle responsive again. When it's working well it does work beautifully though. But because of these issues I've reconsidered getting the GDU lenses because there's no way to manually fix focus if it gets stuck like with the Sigma. Just wanted to hear your experiences so far with it.

RED tech had me reload 6.3.27 firmware and it finally worked!

Seems mosts keys are functional and customizable except for what's supposed to be the Iris control thumb rocker?

When I was trying the prototype side handle at NAB it would control the aperture of the lens. Doesn't seem to be reacting on multiple lenses that i've tried. Also tried customizing them, but it didnt seeem to detect. Any insight on that dan?

Just got my handle and works great out of the box. Man the focus control wheel is amazing, so quick and easy to focus and use all the controls. This is a game changer! Works on 6.3.17 for me

Side Note/Rant: +1 for thumb screws/star wrench combo on every single piece of red gear out there except lens mount. Current 4 screw lens mount needs a custom torx screwdriver that clicks at just the wright pressure, exactly like the one in this video 9:16min in: https://youtu.be/LaqeLrLxYOg?t=9m16s

Next gen lens mounts should have a one screw unlock system like DIMC2 olpfs have, if physically possible. Next gen motion mount goes to zero stops? And new Red lenses both internal focus motor that works like butter off side handle focus dial as well as lens gear for external focus motor.

In conclusion the weapon + side handle is game over for every other video camera out there, nothing compares. Make the above changes and nobody would stand a chance.

Does anyone know how to use the wheel under the C & D button on the side handle? I can't seem to work out what it does - aperture? All the other buttons work great and there's no option to hot key it in the menu settings?

So damn badass - love it

It defaults to controlling Aperture.
