  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

DSMC2 Side Handle / Redcast / ???

I sure hope not - I literally just paid for the Mg upgrade yesterday.

It's possible they could come with an Epic W at a reduced price to the MG, but with no accessory credit. That could even out the value difference.

Accessory credit is gone now either way. Scarlet W is the Epic W...

That's something I admittedly forgot to account for.

I looked at the included additions for the MG upgrade pack (top handle, base expander, lemo adaptor A, MG sidekick, full Weapon case, and XL module) - that's nearly $5k worth of items included in the $14k upgrade cost. Add that to the $5k you get credited back to spend in the RED.com store, and that's $10k of gear to kit out your Weapon MG.

If we stripped away all of the included items and credits, it's essentially $4k to upgrade your Epic-Dragon to a Weapon-MG brain. I see the deal in its entirety now and how incredible it is :thumbup1:

Scarlet-W brain-only peeps are spending $10k with the additional cost of accessories.

I wonder what Epic-W brain-only will cost, and what the upgrade path would run then?

Isn't that why they started the "W" line thats different than the Weapon moniker.

Too many different cameras if they add a Epic W.

I just don't see why they would cross the Epic and Weapon brand names.

They won't cross the brand names. It'll be Epic-W, not Epic Weapon. Same principle as Scarlet-W name. You are the only person I've seen throwing around the term "Epic Weapon" , which - as you state- is nonsensical.

I WANT A DSMC 2 BODY FOR MY EPIC DRAGON SO I CAN EMPTY MY WALLET BUYING ALL THE COOL DSMC 2 AKS!

oops. sorry. caps key got stuck there. or maybe it didn't. ;)

What do you think the W stands for? Epic is the DSMC1 platform or body. Scarlet Evolved from what used to be called the Epic-S, now Scarlet is the moniker for the "littler brother" camera. Weapon is the DSMC2 platform or body. So we have Weapon and Scarlet (W)eapon. Mixing Epic with Weapon or W or whatever you wanna call it will be confucing as fuck.

Beyond that I just don't see the point of this "middle" camera between Scarlet and Weapon MG. Once you add a couple things to the Scarlet it just becomes a Weapon MG.

Strictly IMO -- Raven/Scarlet/Epic/Weapon... that's the lineup. All will have DSMC 2 bodies as part of the baseline. That's where the EPIC-W would need to come in.

RED may have a different view of this, ofcourse. But this is how I'm seeing it all make sense. The exact differentiators between each model is something RED will have to define and clarify, without making silly, contrived variations. Hopefully, they'll be really meaningful ones.

And in my view, there should always be a clear upgrade path (whether by turning in your camera, or upgrade internals/body) to go up the line on this spectrum.

DSMC1 and DSMC2 are the platforms, Epic/Weapon/Scarlet/Epic-w/Scarlet-w/Raven are all models. I totally agree the the naming gets confusing. Not a strength - but Epic isn't the platform it's the model. And Weapon isn't the platform, it's the model. You already have Raven and Scarlet-W that are models in the DSMC2 platform. I guess we will see what is what come April 18 ;)

Would that make Raven "little sister"? Haha. Just kidding. They're beasts in their own right and I'm getting two of them.

I want to know more about red cast . Where does it fit onto the camera? Is it just wireless video feed?

Seems like it would make sense for Redcast to be the new broadcast module. Maybe this time with wireless 4K capabilities.

Not knocking the Scarlet! It was my first Red cam!

Agreed, each camera model is a beast in its own right. I have a Weapon 6k/8k and I have a RAVEN on order and maybe another. For the shots each camera is slotted for, it is best in class.

5. Black Aluminum 6K DSMC2 Body - Someone was very good at hiding the RED coin behind the side handle... There's a big difference in the brushed Magnesium look and the painted aluminum enclosure, and I don't think it's just the light. Those prototype accessories weren't placed for nothing. ;)

I think you are super right on about this. RED make their own "spy" pix which is a lot of fun. Kind of like an M.C. Escher work, or at least the cover of Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.
