I turned on my focus assist on my DSMC2 Epic w and used the small circle option. I will drag the circle on to a object and focus until it turns green. At times it seem to be dead on and many times it doesn't. Is this something many of you use or rely on? My eye sight close up is not as good as it used to be so having a quick focus assist option would be nice that is reliable. I tried canon lenses and also my Zeiss Otus with the same results. I have not tried it someone's face yet only in animate objects.

Thoughts?

good to know! I just wanted to make sure it wasn't just my unit. Thank you.

I may try that. I just think it's silly that the cost of this camera can't even nail that where Canon for the fraction of the cost my Canon C200 do a way better job.

It really comes down to CPU horsepower. Red is shooting big files and raw in a small camera. Some things have to give. I really don't have much problem with focus edge assist.

Canon C200 has its problem too tho...try to use face detect on an interview wide open...after locking on a face the AF will go to sleep unless triggered by detecting out of focus by a certain threshold.

Usually if the interviewee lean fw or bw 1-2cm, it result in not triggering the AF algo and eyes will be out of focus until a major variance is detected...

I sometimes use my smallHD on zoom if critical focus is needed while shooting.

Hey Bob,

coincidentally I find the SmallHD route (all the external monitors thing really) to be very inaccurate since they rely on a 1080P signal...

Internal FOCUS and EDGE FOCUS tools are much much better (I dare to say among the best tools in ANY cam) and they works at the native res...

and also they seems to be less affected by motion blur when not stationary.

BTW I'm not talking about the green circle thingy which is a waste of time tho...

Another +1 for EDGE FOCUS MODE.

I really am flabbergasted that more people don't use this mode. It is far and away the most effective focus peaking I've ever used. The only time it struggles is in EXTREME low light. For everything else it's practically perfect.
