DSMC2 Fan noise quistion.

Can anyone elaborate on why the only way to get a quiet fan( around 30% is acceptable for close up dialog sound recording) is in manual mode?

The "Adaptive preview quiet recording" setting spins the fans at around 50% while the sensor temp is at 42 on a 44 calibration, for example. When recording the fans spin up to 70-72% and lowers the temp to 41.

This has always been the case and it baffles me. Its unusable for any serious dialog recording.

Hi Jens, I don’t have a solution but that has been my experience also. In a hot studio this is a real problem. Hoping that a v2 dsmc2 top plate with a larger single fan will get made and replace the 2 smaller ones causing the issue. Similar to what Ranger has - which is the current available $15k per body fix for this issue. I’d happily add a bit of height to my rig to not have fan noise issues.

If you calibrate to a higher temperature, like 44 or 45 the fans stay quieter.

I’m usually set to 48 on stage days. It sucks though when your face melts during handheld because of it and/or when the fans ramp up during long takes. Maybe adaptive preview quiet record can be modified to not change fan speed unless a critical temp is reached.
