  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

DSMC2 Beta Build v6.4.23

One advantage of having this be only 2k and not 4k is that it is compatible with all the speed settings at smaller sizes (eg 6k image capture). I did find one glitch which is when I tried 8k full combining both R3D and ProRes, the record button locked up yellow and required a reboot. With 8k 2:1 it works fine and anything smaller. I find the high dynamic range version is very flat, almost log looking and probably would require additonal editing, the standard dynamic range gives an image that can be used right out of the camera. I also have tried a variety of contrast and roll off settings baked in, and so far, the medium/medium seems most pleasing for baked in ProRes. I am sure it depends on the situation. The ProRes 2k 444 alone (without R3D) gives well over 2 hours of recording on a 480 card, which is kind of nice. And the 8k (or 6k with speed) image converted in camera down to 2k is really quite beautiful if you do not need higher resolution in the end. Quite happy with this development! I have not found any other problems with the beta so far.

Jon, I am having trouble understanding how to do this. Would you be kind to a knob and explain how to bake in the LUT to me? Perhaps I need to somehow add a LUT to the camera? Or the minimag? :(

Any help or advice you are willing to give I'd be super grateful for.

Sure thing. First this is for Epic W and you need the new firmware that comes up with warning beta version. Then you need to go into menu>image>imagepipeline and select IPP2 (and the contrast/roll off). Then pick codec (shows as compression by default on top menu) and select advanced. Under Codec pick Apple ProRes or combined with R3D. Pick 2k , version of ProRes and then baked in settings. I used ProRes 444 and Rec709/SDR. If you pick 4k then you will have more limited baked in settings (no LUT).

THANK YOU for taking the time. So, I've done all of that. The only difference in what you described was I was choosing "Primary Only (RWG/Log3G10) option on "baked in settings" pn the Codec screen. I went in and changed to "All image settings (Rec 709/SDR)" and recorded a couple clips. They won't play on my computer. Put the card back in, secure formatted, tried again, hit play on the screen and it says "no image blocks" recorded....? I tried changing to "All image settings (Rec 709/HDR)", same thing happened. Switched it back to "Primary Only (RWG/Log3G10) again, and it records. I can play the clips. But there is no baked in Ipp2 on ProRes. Any ideas?

Just updated the Raven to 6.4.23 and my side LCD lost the ability to register touch screen. Buttons on the monitor (red 4.7") work find, and the image and overlay shows, but no touch is detected.

Turn off the camera. Remove all power sources from the brain. Remove the LCD monitor. Waite for 10 ~ 15 minutes. Connect the LCD and power up. Sometimes it works as a charm. Give it a try. If all fails, you may have to open a trouble ticket with RED.

I don't believe this is an option, but in presets can you add the option to also have the shooting resolution? Would be nice. Currently you can have preset for Frames per second so you can make these preset buttons and go back and forth. But what if I want 23.98 fps at 5k and have to go to 4K for the higher resolutions? When switching back and forth it would be cool if both the fps and resolution can be included in a preset so you could just tap a button and go back to 23.98 5k. Tap another button and go to 71.98 fps @ 4K and vice versa

got it all figured out. the last part mentioned I'm told is a known bug as well.

Did I hear somewhere that prores is not spanned anymore?

Bob does that affect the r3d's in any way when dual recording?

Unfortunately I just had this same thing happen. I tried your suggestion Neil, and nothing. I even downgraded to the latest STABLE release and the issue continues. Kind of sucks because one of the helix coils popped out of the primary LCD pogo connector screw, so I can't really use that either :-/

touch screen not working on this latest beta for me
scarlet-w 4.7" dsmc2 screen

when the upgrade was done and peripherals were installed, I could not hit the shut down button on the screen so I used the one on the side of the camera. then i started the camera again and the user agreemenet came up, which I could not agree to as the screen was unresponsive.

went back to beta firmware 6.4.22 and everything seems fine again.

So I started playing around with the new beta on my weapon helium. I set the camera to record R3D and prores at 2K with the baked in all settings. After I hit record, it rolled for a few seconds then the record light turned yellow and wouldn't deactivate. I had to hold to force shut down the camera. If I set it to primary the file records fine. If i try to bake in the all of the settings, it's a no go and the quicktime file size is 16k. On a separate topic, I'm noticing that at high iso's the blacks don't seem to pulse and flicker nearly as much as it used to. Thanks to all of the engineers and everyone at Red for continuing to make our cameras better all the time.

Earlier comment I made on this thread:

I did find one glitch which is when I tried 8k full combining both R3D and ProRes, the record button locked up yellow and required a reboot. With 8k 2:1 it works fine and anything smaller.

Had this same issue on the most recent release firmware, jfyi. Shooting 6k/2k ProRes simultaneously.
