Seriously. If anyone thinks that Canon and Sony are going to sit back and watch as Jim drinks their milkshake, you are fooling yourselves. Jim has actually spurred these companies into action, which is good for all of us. And yet, still they are struggling to overcome this long-entrenched corporate culture of "holding back" technology for marketing and strategic reasons.

When a self-funded maverick guy like Jim comes along and offers up the absolute newest technology with no strings and no legacy attached, it forces the big boys to stop f'ing around and show us what they've got.

Well said, and I totally agree... ! In such competitive corporate technological wars, "we the consumer in the end... win"....

I was not slamming the 5dmll in any way shape or form, I shoot stills, so vid function aside, that rig to me looks like a killer upgrade to my early generation Canon dslr... It has many many features, and performance capabilities and at a reachable price for me, that I have wanted for years... My early generation Canon dslr has served me very very very well, and with my L series lens investments over the years, I can safely say i have extreme confidence in their products...

That said, and personally pondering this DSMC , DSLR replacement announcement lets take the product, technology, specs, legacy and reliability off the table. Now, I am thinking about revolutionary consumer support in this industry. I wonder what Canon's response will be to me, a very loyal consumer when the 5dmll becomes available on the shelf, and I bring in my early generation Canon dslr, and ask them what their "upgrade" credit/program is... ? That "product" definition falls under support, that has nothing to do with specs, or features. That is simply a "choice" by a company CEO in how he wants to do business and support his customer. Software upgrades have been done for years at a fraction of the cost of the "msrp" of the product... I can't think of many if any hard goods co's that have ever had such policy's...

These winds of change, are bringing on some really exciting things !

HDMI vs DisplayPort

HDMI vs DisplayPort

Personally I would rather see a display port adapter then HDMI. HDMI was originally built and intended for CRT displays and frankly I think has outlived it's usefulness. DisplayPort is a much better option for so many different reasons. Google HDMI vs DisplayPort and you will see a ton of information on this.

I would love to see it on a red camera.

As for the HDMI output - it all depends on the downsampling and internal processing as to if it's "worth it" in terms of chroma sampling. It may not be.

I am currently shooting in Serbia documentary about post war situation in Belgrade.

My camera was working for 8 days strait when I decided to do 4k 16:9 rez on BUILD 15 and it was doing fine until I needed to change power supply from the mains to the battery power. I swiched camera off and on again but my LCD Screen would not boot up. It continued to be black. I called RED and find out that one of the possibilities to solve the problem could be that I needed to upgraded the camera software in order to eliminate the problem.
I downloaded BUILD 16 and successfully instoled version Bild 15 2.2.8 but camera for some reason would not do black shading. “Recording error: INT” has cum up evry time I tried to perform that operation.

Anybody any idea what can I do to work around this problem?

Sorry English is not my first language ...

Kind Regards
S

Do we have an exact DAY when Jim is going to be announcing all this stuff in "early November"? :)

Hi dizzydesire. I copied your post over to the help section. More people should see it there.

I think the advantage with Jim is that he is a real shooter. He shoots stills, he knows video, and what he doesn't know, he learns. He's got a great team, great feedback from the forum, and most importantly he's willing to listen. We're in for a great product folks.

1st November in the morning (Sydney daylight savings) time, would be good. :clown2:

I need to decide whether to get 5D Mk2 or save money for DSMC, which I hope will be a better camera for my needs.

Between a D700, Scarlet and parts for my project car; I'm going to be eating peanut butter and jelly everyday. Good thing I do already.

get what you need now, and save for what comes next
G.B.

It's not that straight forward. I shoot for myself, most studios can't afford me :greedy: So, when I shoot and what I shoot with is entirely up to me and flexible.

I could get 5D as soon as it is available and start shooting soon after. But, I would be disappointed if DSMC was released 3 months later and it would suit my needs. I'd rather wait.

You see, I can justify spending $5k more on DSMC if it allowed for PL mounted glass. I already have Master Primes and would prefer to use them instead of buying Canon L glass, which is not exactly what I am looking for.

I like Canon's sensor, DR and sensitivity, though.

If I only knew the availability of DSMC, available lens mounts, sensitivity/DR as well as long exposure capability, I would not spend any money on Canon. I'd rather wait for the right stuff :whistling:

Fortunately, Canon is not shipping the 5Dm2 until at least the end of November, so that means we will have time to hear what Jim says and make a decision. It's all about being patient now, something all of us tend to struggle with from time to time. :calm:

One thing that hasn't really been mention is the high ISO/low noise of the 5d2

As I'm sure you know, sensor size plays a big part in that. RED built the ONE with a sensor that is the correct size for cinema, so it doesn't make sense to criticize them for doing something that's contrary to the basic purpose of the tool. Just scaling the RED ONE performance up to Still35 size would improve it by two and a half times.

The reason I'm excited about RED is that they care first and foremost about quality. Canon, on the other hand, cares first and foremost about Sales and Marketing. Let me give you two brief examples.

First, all Canons throw away a stop of headroom for every exposure over ISO 1600 (ISO 12,800 loses *three* stops of dynamic range!). If Canon bothered to implement a very simple software feature (digital ISO), those settings would not lose so much dynamic range. They had it with the 10D, but removed it (maybe so they can sell it back to their customers as an "upgrade" some day in the future). RED didn't make that mistake.

Second, Canon sensors don't mask all four borders, and the JPEG processor doesn't even use the masked pixels that they have. Worse: neither does their RAW development software. So Canon cameras are plagued with pattern noise that reduces usable dynamic range. Yet another "feature" that Canon might bother adding some day in the future and charge a premium for. RED got this right from the start.

If their first attempt was any indication, I think RED will have some nice things coming.

By the way, Jeff, you've only made two posts so far and both are highly inflammatory. I hope you also enjoy level-headed discussion.

As for lenses, sorry a reworked tamron or sigma wont cut it. If you cant out resolve Canons L series or the trophies in nikons case, you dont have a chance. Mabey a soccer mom here and there but the core of this industry wont budge.

Duh! Reworked Tamron or Sigma? Who suggested that? I don't consider Canon L glass as good enough at those resolutions. And, tollerances and mechanics of Canon L lenses are very poor in my book. For me, buying Canon L glass would be a waste of money.

As I said, the reason am looking forward to DSMC is that, I hope, it may offer PL mount option, so that I could use some real glass.

One thing that hasn't really been mention is the high ISO/low noise of the 5d2, a characteristic that Red can only dream about. Even at 3200+ the noise is still under control on the canon, were as red starts to fall apart very early on(500). Its obviously not apples to apples we are comparing and the 5d2 cant even do a fraction of what red can do, but for a fraction of a fraction of the cost the Canon can do something the Red cant even get close to. The 5d2 is the best of breed low light video camera on the market. If you want low light video it is the only option. As for his DSMC Jim should watch his arrogance because if he dosent provide a dsmc with clean iso up to 12800, plus all the bells and whistles of the current models. The digital still world wont give him the time of day. Go read the 5d forum at dpreview 90% could care less about video they want clean high iso, Fast and accurate AF, and IQ that can out perform the highest resolution lenses on the planet. As for lenses, sorry a reworked tamron or sigma wont cut it. If you cant out resolve Canons L series or the trophies in nikons case, you dont have a chance. Mabey a soccer mom here and there but the core of this industry wont budge.

You should watch your arrogance, coming to Jim's forum and talking shit right off the bat.

Yes, high ISO performance is one of the main reasons I myself am very excited about 5Dm2, and yes, I also hope that DSMC or Scarlet or whatever it is called has great performance at ISO 3200 or 6400. We'll have to wait and see.

As far as lenses, for all we know, this new camera from red might be able to take Canon and Nikon glass. Who knows.

Why are you bolding that "Jim should watch his arrogance"? He didn't highlight it. It does give another meaning.

Jim should watch his arrogance

This thread isn't heading in a good direction.. and if you talk shit about my buddy Jim i'll show you to the door. Goodbye Jeff, glad to have known you.

Anyone else?
