Jim, can you give us a ballpark idea about when you will announce some details of DSMC?

The main things I am interested to know are:

1. What glass will work with DSMC?
2. What resolutions & framerates will be available?

The more I think about DSMC, the more I worry that it will compete so directly with Epic and Red One that your customers will cry and moan, asking you to "dumb it down."

I mean, you can't offer a Vista Vision camera with REDCODE RAW and high framerates without at least drinking some of Red One's milkshake. Am I wrong?

oh man thats crap footage -is that nikon? wow man.....

im waiting for RED still camera cool

It depends there are so many possibilities. Is DSMC a Medium/Large Format or FF35mm? If DSMC is a Full-Frame 35mm than will it compete with Scarlet unless they merge? If DSMC is a Medium Format/Large Format than will it compete with Epic unless they merge? To me the only way to still have differences with all cameras is that they all have different sensor sizes. RedOne will always be the first Reds S35 and it will, have hardware/software upgrades to keep up. :red_bandana: I think Jim will give you details in early November.

I heard a rumor a while back that nikon had plans to dip into the medium format digital market, with something like a 40 or 50 mpxl monster. If it had any compatibility with legacy lenses, even if it was only the longer f-lengths, id be in.

Or you know, ill just get the DSMC

The much rumored Nikon MX series perhaps? A more mainstream, for want of a better word, take on the recently released Leica S series.

Looking at the market rightnow it doesn't even matter what RED comes up with, it can't be that bad. Nikon and Canon seem to tease the indie film crowd with their HD movie modes, but they don't want them to get just "there" yet...wait for their new models next year or something.
Ok I get the thing with CMOS sensor beeing slow and that it takes time to develop...but the lack of manual control is just for marketing purposes.
Whatever will come next year, I don't want to buy expensive full format lenses!

that sensor looks bigger than 35mm to me.

When you compare the mount of the mysterious ad to the mount of a D3/D700, the senors are the same size. The grip on the other hand is much much smaller.

I would guess this is a full frame sensor in a medium sized body. If so, I'm holding out for that instead of the D700 I planned on picking up this month.

The details of the RED DSMC (Digital Still & Motion Camera) will be announced at the end of this year.

Jim

Jim,
I must say when I saw footage from the Red ONE of the Floatplane flying towards the runaway it was so smooth. I was amazed at the smoothness and lack of artifacts, it was truly amazing, it was like I was seeing video without a veil over it and seeing it with my own eyes.

However, I my interest is in still photography and I am very happy when I read that you will be coming out with a still picture camera. I hope the files will have the look of the Red ONE and I'm sure the camera will have its own unique industrial design and method of operation.

Looking forward to reading about the details of the camera. I'm waiting with anticipation and thats an understatement.

Best Regards,
Ken

p.s. Please design new Red optics for the camera.

yes bigger... thats what the only word in the Ad says..'Big' if you look at the other ads posted there one reportedly shows the 3 sensors, DX, FX and then MX (?)

Hmm, that ad contradicts my findings. Unless the mount is much larger on the new camera in the "Big" ad and the MX sensor scales with the FX sensor.

Canon and Nikon coming witha HD camera built in to their DSLR camera is not meant for film makers i think. Its good for journalist to take photos then make a film of the same story they covering.

For a film maker going to use DSLR canon is a joke. where will u put follow focus , eyepiece, LCD screen, and the way they are design are not meant to be for film makers.

Its like telling Ferrari drivers that if they want to use it as a dumper truck they can by using their front hood to use it for sand.

its totally off

Any word on whether the Canon or Nikon will allow pictures to be taken whilst recording video?

if you look at one of the other ads it shows three different sized lenses so maybe the mount is bigger too?

Strong aliasing in new 5DII video

Strong aliasing in new 5DII video

DPreview has posted two new video clips from the 5DII. In the second one here:
http://s3.amazonaws.com/movies.dpreview.com/CanonEOS5DMarkII/Video2.MOV
there looks to be strong color aliasing artifacts along the bottom of the train and on a grate in the upper left of the frame near the end. It could just be that the optical anti-aliasing filter is too weak but it is so visible that I think it may be caused by readout sub-sampling of the sensor in video mode. It looks like the bar is not yet set so high for a video mode of Red's DSMC.
