Last week I went to install a new DSMC Top Plate on my almost new Scarlet and, to my surprise, I discovered that it does not fit properly and I was wondering who else might have experienced the same.
By that I mean that the fastening holes don’t match those on the camera’s body as precisely as they should.
The inter-axes are short by a few thou creating a moderately bad friction when introducing the bolts in the thread and, if forced to do their job even ever so gently, the result is the camera threads are being damaged.
Obviously that’s not what anyone would want so I though I would place the Plate on my milling machine in order to increase the already generous clearance but that cannot be done without biting into the threads designed to retain the fasteners in place even when not in use.
As a mechanical engineer I normally design and machine all of the ancillary parts needed for my equipment but in this occasion my brand new milling machine was on his way and, as I needed it soon, I decided to go for the genuine part instead.
All of the parts made by myself are machined to precise fit with almost no tolerance at all (just enough for thermal expansion) so one can understand my disappointment having paid over £250 for it.
Unfortunately I don’t thing this is a one off, all though I wish it was and as being made on a CNC machine they all are likely to inherit the same defect.
I would be extremely anxious to hear someone else’s comments on this before I return it or repair it.
