  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

DSMC Tactical Top Plate

Screws and yes, the LCD screws onto the top of the plate if you wish.

I know someone who need both display and handle on the top,
but don't want to put his redtouch on a magic arm...

So in this way, is it possible to attach the red touch at the back,
and the top handle reversed, at the front of the camera ?
Of course the grip will be above the lens, but, maybe it will not be visible on the shot.

And, if it's possible to put a top handle on this plate, is the swat rail still needed ?

Absolutely. Yes, you can attach it exactly as you describe and yes you need the swat rail to do so.

You don't necessarily need the SWAT rail if you use something other than the Red Sliding Handle - i.e. something like the Wooden Camera ones or the old Red Top Handle.

EDIT: Though the SWAT rail is nice to take the handle off quickly

Do you mean some like this?

Thought I'd bring this back up to the top, as I'm not totally sure I understand how to achieve the configuration pictured above. I gather that the handle pictured is a past model Red top handle--can you mount the LCD to the new handle in a similar way? I have the Tactical Top Plate and Left Tactical Ribcage Set, but no NATO rails yet.

Once that's solved, what would be the best way to add a shotgun mic into that mix? My goal is to get those three things--handle, LCD, shotgun, on top and keep things in as tight as possible, while not making it impossible to mount a brick battery on the back. What would be the best combo of Red/Wooden parts to pull that configuration off?

Thanks everyone!

This is the new sliding top handle. You unscrew the rosette from the front to allow this configuration. The sliding top handle comes with a NATO rail.

I can't help you with the shotgun question. My answer would be, "Put it on a boom pole at the end of an audio guy." :-)

Believe you me--any of my critical audio comes from a Sennheiser 416 on a boom. I'm as big a stickler as anyone. But holy crap is it nice to let Pluraleyes sync to a scratch track rather than me having to do it manually!

Thanks for the clarification on the handle--super helpful.

Maybe something like a Wooden Easy Stick and a "cold shoe" is the best way to go? Mount the Easy Stick to the Tactical Top Plate, the NATO and cold shoe to the Easy Stick and the LCD to the Red Top Handle? Seems kinda complicated, but maybe that's the simplest way...

The simple way for guide track audio would be for phantom power to be enabled, in the mean time everyone is scratching around with crappy self powered mics but like the playback issue with Epic, we just have to be patient for a software update.

Personally I wouldn't be fixing the touch screen on the body, if your intending putting it on a rig, mantis, clutch etc. Apparently the best place for Scarlet is as close to or on the shoulder as possible. This mean the screen becomes impossible to view unless you see through your right ear.

P.S. @ David, yes audio always preferred at the end of the boom pole with operator & mixer attached. lol.

If you use a timecode recorder, the sync is amazingly simple and fast in RCX Pro. Select the folder that contains the audio, click on "sync all clips in the bin" and it's done. It's so fast that the first time I did it I thought nothing had happened.

The sliding top handle comes with a NATO rail.

Is it still the case ? It doesn't look like a small nato rail is included in the sliding top handle purchase.
Or did you mean that's what we can see on the picture ?

Hey guys,

Maybe a silly question, but is the requirement for attaching the tactical top plate to the Scarlet the same as with the Epic?

Specifically, do you have to remove the original top plate of the Scarlet before attaching the tactical top plate?

cheers

One way of attaching a microphone to either the epic/scarlet. Get the wooden camera cold shoe which screws on top of a top plate. From there you have a number of excellent options adapted from the still camera world - eg K Tek make a number of excellent mounts of various kinds that use a cold shoe including extenders that move the mic away from the camera a bit (even one that moves it off to the side a bit. K Tek also a great camera mount that attaches to their a hot shoe. Another good option is the rycote invision system that moves it off to the side. A really simple option is windtech hot shoe mic holder or the J Rod Pro Shoe to 1/4-20 adapter. you can attach a mic holder to the Pro Shoe.
