How's it going everyone?

I got a little bit of a tricky issue at arms today: the dial and nav cluster on my dsmc side handle has stopped working. The problem is that the affected area is restricted solely to the zone highlighted here: (link to the image I think should be attached to this post but just for safety regardless)

For a bit more backstory, I was using the camera on location about two days back and there were no issues at all, side handle was working and I could navigate though the menus and change settings and everything else you would expect the nav and dials to be able to be used for. Packed all the gear up and stored the camera in a pelican case as per usual for transport and bought it all back with me, so it was always in my possession, no wrongdoing of anyone else or anything. When I went to unpack the camera and mess around a bit with the settings, changing back what had been changed etc..., only the nav cluster and the surrounding dial and enter button had stopped working. Every other button on the side handle works and I am still able to control the function of the camera with the user set buttons and the recording trigger, but without the enter button I cant close pop up messages and I am unable to navigate through the settings menus and stuff.

I have cleaned the contacts on both ends of camera and handle, reset the camera with older firmware and then reinstalled firmware with updates for the side handle, but all to no avail. Camera still functions flawlessly, function buttons on the side handle function normally, recording trigger on the handle works, so the issue truly just comes down to the highlighted region in the linked image.

I couldn't find any mention of this being a problem elsewhere, so figured this is the place to post as I use it with my Scarlet MX constantly without issue. If anyone has any suggestions or ideas how to resolve this issue, I am all ears.

Hey man,
Ok, it seems like you have tried the failsaves with the firmware trick. Maybe try again the "Rediscover" in the settings menu. I have had handles play up on me as well, but I fixed that issue with the firmware trick you mentioned above. Otherwise, maybe ask the RED Technical Support crew on the official website if they have some form of trick up their sleeves.

Maybe, if you know anyone with a DSMC body willing to test it out on their brain, then you can eliminate some issues there. A good way to find out if it is something to do with the camera or just the module.

Otherwise, I would probably look at Option B now and find yourself a replacement handle for 150-250 bux.

Option C: maybe open up the handle and see if there is any thing no connected. However, This is really not recommended. If you're a little savvy with the tech, then have a look at what is inside. You will need a Torx screwdriver for this mission.

However, If I were you, I would be searching the market place here on REDUSER or on Ebay, or even your local market for a replacement.

Cheers!

Thank you for the advice filled response!

I’d love to try using the rediscover function, but without the dial zone on the handle I can’t access those menus sadly. Not an owner of a touch monitor nor a Redmote so only navigation is through the parts of the side handle that aren’t all too happy at the moment.

I’m planning to ask around locally to see if any other DSMC owners or operators are nearby in Tokyo to test out swapping the handle and narrowing down the issue further, appreciate that notion.

I’ve opened up and disassembled the brain before, I’m sure the handle could be handled as well but I’d rather that as a last resort rather than a first instinct!

I have been looking to pick up a 5” Touch Monitor anyway, so maybe this might just be the push I need to do that if I can find one at a reasonable price.

Not in an urgent need to use the camera as I have many recourses for other brands and options nearby and available, but would be nice to have my baby up to full operation as anyone would want as well.

Appreciate the advice once again, thanks for taking to time to respond to my queries!

Cheers,
Lachlan Briggs

Good luck, Lachlan!
Yeah, you can get a REDMOTE for like 50 bux nowdays that could help you out. But, yeah, try locally to see if someone can help you out.

If you can get a touch monitor, that is also a good investment.

Eitherway, you will have to spend a coin or two.

Cheers!
