  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

DSMC FAN 2.0 UPGRADE KIT (TOP/BOTTOM)

I really was hoping RED would solve this and announce something at NAB. Pretty disappointed that didn't happen. Not sure how we can make enough noise (no pun intended) so RED will prioritize this higher on their roadmap.

Doesn't mean we can't make do the way things are, but this really would be one less thing to worry about (edit: specially when its a long take with dialog in a quiet scene). And a pretty important one at that. Right now, I'm using one of the adaptive modes, but really want this addressed at the fan level before we go into software manipulations to workaround.

Perhaps you are correct in that its just not possible given the size of the EPIC body? And this can never be solved until RED makes a new EPIC body?

Hi Nikhil. I think that it is very real possibility that the issues are inherent to the design -facing the fan forward, making the body tiny were part of the design concept. The whole DSCM concept, for good or ill, took off and became the design imperative. Personally, I was only ever interested in a cinema camera. Having said that, perhaps there are some possibilities in the front baffle idea and also redesigning the front fan to get rid of the whining noise.

One practical strategy I intend adopting is exactly what you suggest - simply making do. For quiet interview situations I will go back to manual mode - I will just have to put up with the notorious leaf blower effect in between takes. Adaptive is certainly not working at the moment in these situations and proving an embarrassment on set. It is simply unreasonable to ask my clients whether they happen to own noise reduction software. For situations where sound is not so critical I will use the adaptive setting.

I am going to explore the Fan Plate but at the same time I do not want to keep throwing money at this problem unless the Fan Plate is a decided improvement but I guess I will not know that until I actually get it and try it. Anyone out there with a Fan Plate care to comment?

Hello Rob,

Mecasax can send you a FanPlate money back garantee if not convinced. You'll have to handle the shipping cost if not convinced (about 100$ both ways to Switzerland).
On monday I can ask the selling department to get in contact with you if interested.

PM me for more infos.

Best regards.

Patrick

Hi Patrick,

Yes, I would like to take up that offer. It is a kind gesture and I think one which shows some faith in your own product! Could you ask Mecasax to contact me and I will purchase it on that basis. I have just visited the site and I see that it has come down in price quite a lot - $485 shipping included which is excellent.

I will PM you with some further questions. Who knows, this might be the beginning of something nice on the Red sound front.

Best

Hello patrick ,

Can we use all red ribs and tactical cage elements with your plate ?

It looks very interesting . Can you pm me with a few pictures of the plate with red accessories ?

Thanks

Philippe

Hi Patrick

I also wonder if the Fan Plate would be compatible with Viewfactor and W0oden Camera side ribs.

Thanks.

Hi Patrick

Please can you accurately measure (in mm) from the camera brain body base (i.e. without bottom plate/riser) to the centre of your fan plate side bolt fixing?
Preferably to nearest 0.5mm accuracy.

Also do you supply the 1/4"-20 square nuts to go in the top bolt channel grooves, or have an online link to a source?

Thanks!

Hello Eric,
Sorry for the delay. I don't own an Epic so it took a bit more time than a call back.

Hi Patrick

Please can you accurately measure (in mm) from the camera brain body base (i.e. without bottom plate/riser) to the centre of your fan plate side bolt fixing?
Preferably to nearest 0.5mm accuracy.

From the bottom of the FanPlate up to the center of the side bolt fixing point it's 9.25mm.
As the camera is speced at 136.75mm
The size from the bottom of the camera up to the center of the FanPlate bolt rail is 146mm

Also do you supply the 1/4"-20 square nuts to go in the top bolt channel grooves, or have an online link to a source?
Thanks!

Yes we do provide the 1/4-20 square nuts, below is the package as you recieve it.

Pat

Thanks for taking the time to measure and provide this information Patrick.

Still considering the purchase, but great to know all the details! Now to work out if it's compatible with my existing setup :)

Hi Patrick. Just to report back. It looks like the bottom of the WC top plate to the centre of the side bolt fixing holes is 5.5mm (certainly no more than 6mm) as close as I can see with the naked eye and a steel rule.

This would indicate that your plate's side bolt fixing spacing is incompatible with VF/WC Side Ribs, so a consideration if buying your Fan if not invested in Red cage fittings.
