GRID had created this for the DSMC 1 side handle to relocate it. I was curious if there's a solution in the works for DSMC 2 bodies to use the v1 side handles?

I'm aware there's a new side handle coming out. As more people move into the DSMC2 arena, there are probably a lot of side handles floating around that could still be put to work for shoulder rigs.

Rant warning...

Rant warning...

Nothing but props to GRID for their clever adapter to allow the side handle to live in a more ergonomic position on rigs where getting your hand on the hard mount requires a contortionist.

That said, why isn't there a far more elegant solution for a DSMC2 handle that fits the hand better and supports a wide variety of mounting options? I feel like a broken record. As long as humans are operating cameras, sometimes for long stretches, we need ergonomically designed hardware.

Am I the only one who simply wants to hold the camera in a comfortable position with smart, ergonomic handles that have crucial controls at your fingertips? Right hand - start/stop with a zoom controller, left hand with focus and iris control. Adjustable aluminum arms and rosettes to accommodate various setups and Bob's your MF-ing Uncle. I've already had one shoulder surgery due to the bone spurs I developed shooting long hours off the shoulder. WTF?

RED has made an unbelievably small and lightweight camera, beyond anything I could have imaging 20 years ago - my shoulder thanks you. For larger crewed shows there are lots of options to rig it in myriad ways - but what about when the situation dictates no 1st AC or other support?

If anyone out there is interested in making ergonomic solutions for human camera operators feel free to PM me. I've done my 10,000 hours using pretty much every motion camera system made, going back to 1/2" reel to reel with a deck in a backpack in the 1970's. With todays technology, both in microprocessors and materials, the potential is there. Now that RED has moved to the DSMC2 platform - which includes models like the Raven that are likely to be used in scenarios without a full camera department - it seems like a perfect time to stop with the band-aids and design a cure.

I don't think ergonomics matter so much any more. Not like they used to.
gimbals, exoskeletons, easyrigs, etc. "detach" the camera from the shoulder so all that matters is the weight so one can bear holding it in their hands longer.
The style has changed whether we like it or not. Red is not really designed for "cat on the shoulder " setup but what it is designed for is low weight configuration where DSMC2 does not even have video outputs stripped down. This approach plays very well into the future (and present- lets be honest) main stream of hand held setups....

A couple of years ago I worked a couple shows with a Zacuto rig on an Epic and it wasn't a great experience. That said, if they've upped their game they'll get my money - if they haven't they won't. What makes me willing to take the time to do a test drive is that there are some clever design choices and it looks to be pretty ergonomic. I will absolutely report back on how it goes.

Jacek makes a fair point, when the rig comes off sticks/dolly/jib there are many more options than just off the shoulder. That said, I still get plenty of calls where they expect me to be a human tripod for hours on end, often in crowded locations where on the shoulder is the small footprint required - and there is no focus puller on crew. Just saying'

I'd also be quite interested to see if the DSMC2 handle could trickle down to the DSMC system

What are you talking about?
Human body will still "wear" a camera for a long time. Egronomics still is key in motion picture. Drones and Gimbals aren't the only future of cinema.
Show me a better shoulder/tripod solution than Recoil. I would be pleased to buy it.
I've used the Recoil with my custom made shoulder pad and it's the only ballanced shoulder solution I've seen out there.

as far as I know that GRID product never made it to market

Has someone seen it working?

You could possibly use a MonoPod and still use the RedTouch, if you wanted a small lightweight set up... unless you have a long Lemo cable and had the touch on your chest, not sure a shoulder rig would be right.

Would love to see your shoulder pad, I really like my Zacuto VCT Pro Baseplate, but would like more padding. Also interested in moving my dsmc 2 side handle.
