Folks,

Hoping to tap into the assembled wisdom.

For sticks, I have Miller Arrow 55. Nice, light, does the job. I almost never get involved in the whole Arri standard / dovetail / 2065 etc. scene; that's more ironmongery than I want to lug around. I simply bolt the Miller quick release plate to the bottom of the Scarlet and get to work.

Question is, what's the simplest thing to throw between them (between the bottom of the Scarlet and the Miller tripod plate I mean) to support 19mm rods at the correct height? Any suggestions? I've looked at stuff from RED, Wooden Camera, and one or two others, and nothing quite does that job.

Thanks

Mike

Mike,

The Red Quick Release system is very cool because it allows you to remove the camera in two ways. You can use the traditional method of sliding the camera, rods, and whatever else is attached to them off of the dovetail. Or you can simply release the body and lens with the quick release. It's exceptional. Is there something, other than price, that didn't seem good?

Tim,

The RED QR system is very nice, but price and unnecessary complication are two strikes against it; my ideal plate would bolt to the bottom of Scarlet, would support 19mm rods at the correct height - and the bottom of the plate would look like the bottom of the Scarlet, so I could bolt the the Miller tripod plate directly to it.

I'd also consider a solution which would.allow me to re-use the old base plate & shoulder dovetail from the RED ONE base production pack.

Just curious, was there a flat dovetail that could be used with that baseplate instead of the shoulder mount?

Hey Mike,

Do yourself a big favor and get the new RED stuff. It is brilliantly designed, light, quick to use and once you have it configured you will not take it off. Trust me. Well worth the investment.

By buying the parts and skipping the back 19mm you are only at $1050.00. By the time you mess with all the other stuff that does not work that well you will have spent that much and wasted a bunch of time.

I even have a 2nd long dovetail attached to my shoulder mount so I can go from tripod to shoulder in 5 seconds.

Here is what you need:

http://www.red.com/store/rail-components/product/dsmc-universal-mount-19mm Only have to have 1 but if you are using anything heavy then you may need the 2nd one for the rear.

That is what I'm using with my Miller 55. Perfect.

Bloody nice sticks mike... you know you can get away with much lighter on scarlet. Those bad boys are going to be a pile bricks going up volcanos. I picked up a sachtler 6 carbon fibre ones which is not rated as high for weight, but much more pleasing to carry uphill and longer distance. I'm going to plan a set up for going up hill where I strip everything I don't need.

One thing I noticed about the red gear and baseplates that they are heavy. Not sure if have considered but there are some decent cheap light weight rigs/base pates on 15mm rods.

Someone of the forum also turned me on to Fstopgear bags. The make some amazing packs that were made for our type of work.

I chose the RED dovetail quick release system. Just gotta wait for it (and my camera!) to show up. Looking forward to a quick, seamless transition between sticks/handheld/steadicam.

Michael, I will be going for lighter - much lighter - for up hills! But I don't *only* shoot volcanoes; my last job was in a pole dancing club... anything that pays!

Everyone else: I'm seeing Jason from Cinema Oxide tomorrow or Monday:

$169, job done. It's not Machined Alloy Porn the way the RED QR system is, but it does the job: 19mm rails on EPIC/Scarlet, quick, cheap.
