  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Dslr vs film zacuto shoot out

Just thought this might be important to clear up any latent incredulity:

Zacuto - "Erik, you didn't get my point. We don't sell any of the cameras, so we have no vested interest in one camera being better over another. This is a camera test, not an accessory test. Plus, we didn't do the test, Bob, Philip, Gary and Ryan did. I just made a documentary about their test. I think that everyone will agree that Zacuto producing this test has nothing to do with the outcome of the TEST itself.

Yes, their is a marketing benefit (that's how we can afford to make all of our content) but I don't think it ever slants the content itself, at least I try not to and I never bring the word Zacuto or try to sell in any of my content. At least give me that."

The test is ridiculous! These DSLRS are giving you a highly aliased maybe 500p image (if that) and it's not real detail, just aliased false-detail basically invented by the camera that looks a bit like the real thing, and you think it compares well to modern film which can resolve around 3.5 K with no moire whatsoever!?

Man, group psychosis alert!!!!!! (Or ultra-low unprofessional standards alert)

These are SD CAMERAS!!! HD = 1080p, not 500p.

Yeah, but there are two things here. One is the fact that people find these images pleasing and Two, they look better than SD. Love it or hate it, people like what they are getting. I'm not saying you aren't right, but it is what it is.

Think they're right in between ...like 720P.
Which is damn good considering their price point.

For feature work that has any big screen chance..not
worth it. But for music videos that will live on the
internet...they're pretty much it right now.

The interesting part of the whole thing for me is the limitations of the pixel skipping. It's the fact that the pixel size relative to the dead area not being sampled on the sensors is huge, and that even if a OLPF was used, I believe the image would look absolutely horrible if it were tuned enough to get rid of the false detail.

The basic problem is that the OLPF has to be designed basically to push all the detail out of the dead areas into surrounding active areas. Whether by diffusion or birefringence given they line skip like 2 lines, 2/3 of the space in a slice of area is thrown out. (and if you look at both vertical and horizontal, ~80%-to-%90 percent of the pixels on say the 7D are ignored.

This shows how important active to inactive area is for a given pixel.

I record at 1080p on my 7D and release in 720p. For a 720p camera it's nice. And mostly I have done music videos and event videos. I've held off on my movie waiting for the Scarlet because I'd really like to shoot this one. :)

You say... Ridiculous, Group psychosis alert, Ultra-Low Unprofessional Standards.

I say... Useful tools that I use to earn income!

I'll be shooting a low budget political commercial at the State Capitol this afternoon entirely with an HDSLR camera. Am I worried? No! I know the limitations of the tools I use. And in my market, only one TV station can air local spots in HD, so the finished spot will be SD.
FYI, I have shot close to 30 spots to date that include footage from HDSLR cameras. The footage cuts well with other cameras, including the Red One.
So at the end of the day, while you know that these new cameras can't hold a candle to a modern 35mm film camera. I'll be at the pub buying rounds with the money I made with this POS HDSLR camera.:cheers2:

All the Best!

I couldn't agree more. I've made more money with my 7D than any other camera I have used. I've already got three more things lined up just from some sample video I posted to some people.

I will be replacing the 7D with the S35 brain one day, but I am certainly having fun waiting for that to be available! :)
