Sums it up nicely... hehehehe

Admittedly though, I am considering using a DSLR to shoot covertly on an upcoming short... Need to shoot on/in a subway and don't want to go the correct and safe routes of permitting...

Anyone know someone with a 5D/7D with PL mount for rent (LA area)?

On topic: this video was hilarious.

Off topic: A PL mount on DSLR might be the most ridiculous thing I've ever seen. Lets smack an $8,000 cinema lens on the front of this photo camera! People will tell you "they put a video feature on the DSLR's for a reason", but these cameras are not video cameras. Plain and simple. END rant ahah.

I dislike the DSLR "fad", but I do understand the need to be "covert" while shooting. Good luck with your shoot, and thanks for sharing the video!

I know arri csc has them, the mount is a little tight though, gets a little annoying changing lenses sometimes. after using one from csc, it was not really worth it, even with the cookes.

I think the DSLR Producer segment is stupid.

The first few of these were funny... but they got tired quick.

My feeling is simply that the people running the camera mean more than the camera itself. The 7D has more issues than most... but ultimately its up to me.

As to the notion of a PL 7D for guerilla run and gun... I recommend against it.

Once you strap huge lenses on you will garner attention. Attention=bad.

I recommend a regular 7D with a good set of cine modified DSLR primes, like Duclos Zeiss. Actually, given a choice and time I'd try and get a set of Zeiss ZE lenses modded... because of the electronic controls.

Don't just add any of the adapter rings out there... they are big and attention getting.

Another option would be Zeiss CP.2 lenses if you need primes or the Zeiss LWZ.2 or the Angeniuex zooms with EF mounts on them. That is a bad ass piece of kit. Again the problem is that any of these are a huge lens on the camera, much bigger than SLR glass, and much more attention getting.

My reason for preferring PL mount lenses on these cameras is entirely their operation/ergonomics for the cine function. You don't get a better quality image- this camera system is limited by the body not the lens when used for video/film.

If you are guerilla, then this reason is far less important... after all having an AC is a dead giveaway for guerilla film.

Hey! That guy stole my idea from my Sound Mixer Hell cartoon:

http://www.xtranormal.com/watch/6807847/

Almost 16,000 hits on mine. (But I freely admit to borrowing the idea from the Best Buy employee who did the iPhone vs. Evo cartoon the week before.)

I think everybody in the business has come up against an arrogant, ignorant producer who wants too much for too little. It's not a technological problem; it's a people problem.

Hahahahah

There was a slight Red slam in there, too, though. (He says, "I can't believe I'm saying this, but can't we use the Red?")

Anson - I hate the EX series and it's not small enough. It looks like a video camera. No one is going to stop me with "a regular still camera". (I also hate recording sound to the camera... Mixer will record separately and we will sync in post. Using lavs, no boom...)

To all worried about "slapping a cine lens on" - Ultra Primes are pretty compact. I am totally against using still lenses for motion work anyhow.

I won't be using an AC. Guerilla is bigger than what I'm trying to accomplish. Stealth and covert are more like it...

Shawn - I'm sure you have seen more ridiculous things than a DSLR with a PL mount... At least I hope your life is full of things that would constitute as more ridiculous... (Like putting still lenses on the R1?)

Ryan - RED slam... it is a reality to some people. I can't worry about peoples' opinions about the camera... It was still funny though.

I am also playing with my R1 configurations, body positions while sitting and camo for camera... Thinking of LapPod in a backpack...

Hi Shawn,

It's no Red MX - I'm the first to admit, but the PL7D I own is a good tool for the kind of situation you describe.

I have it on consignment at Sim Video in Los Angeles, Cliff Hsui is my contact there - please let them know I sent you.

Thanks!:yesnod:

Dan - Thank you.

David - Nice camera, but I'm still left looking for one with a PL mount so I can use Ultra Primes.

Until Epic is released, a PL7D is really my only option unfortunately...

I bought a t2i for the small footprint, and the covert aspect. If you are going to TV it's great. I look at it this way, it makes better pictures than my Varicam, is a 1/4 the size and 1/60th the cost. It lives in it's cute little pelican case next to the lens case on the cart. As an addition to a red not an instead of, it's great. As is the GoPro HD hero. I keep one of those around always.

Nick

Seriously? I'm going for covert... If I were to even consider it, I'd just shoot with my R1...

Shawn, my bad.

I was just commenting the xtranormal link... Referring to the one that makes fun of a client demanding the Alexa.

Now question: You wanna go covert with PL lenses?

Why not go with a Tamron 17-50 or Sigma 17-70? Something that demands the optical quality or aperture of the given PL glass? The project?

GoPro... duh. Thanks for reminding me Nick. Nice back up.

The smallest with good focus action is clearly a T2i with ZF's. Use no accessories and very few people will even look twice. You get a long throw, great mechanics, small lenses, tiny camera, and the same exact image as the 7D. Look hard and you might find a T2i with a PL conversion.

[rant]on the flip side, I can't stand the mindless hate and ridicule someone may have to put up with for using a figure of speech... say you are relaxing and shooting the shit, then you say something such as "it need no lights" when really you were clearly meaning to say the darn thing is very sensitive... there are many who are just waiting for the oportunity to jump on anything to sound like they have a clue...[/rant]

ooooh...

I have access to Ultra Primes. They're fast and compact. I'm staying on the wider side and am confident the lenses won't "stick out and look as though I'm filming something"... They are f'en great lenses too.

The project is a 30 min short that requires me to shoot as covert as possible which helps push the story along as it is a "covert short". It is the first in a series of spy shorts following a central character. This one demands a zero profile while shooting, hence the PL7D. There's a budget but not enough to pull off what is required but doing it covertly actually helps the story anyway.

Thx Roberto - looking into it now...
