All Android phone combined sales - not Droid alone. Sorry if that's confusing in the title of the thread.

I think the big reason for this is Apple's AT&T deal (of which Apple takes a cut). Verizon has 92 Million customers and phones get updated by consumers every two years. Droid has access to all providers and doesn't charge a fee. That savings is passed along to the consumer. It's a big advantage. With 50,000 Apps already on the Droid the App advantage is negligible.

There's another thing - almost all the important patents in the cell phone business are owned by everyone other than Apple. The companies all have deals with each other. But now Apple has sued Nexus maker HTC. Nexus has patents going back 13 years... is Apple violating or in danger or losing access to some of those patents? Very possibly. Get ready for the counter suits.

Interesting computer wars right now.

I have to guess there will be a Motorola/Adobe/Google coalition that never would have happened without the latest Apple offensive. Can Apple really win that? Considering Droid is already outselling them I wouldn't bet on it.

have both, iphone better for callsheets and sometimes email...droid sucks for non google email, it works but has it's problems...big difference, you can make calls with the droid that sound like old landline calls, iphone sounds like, well, old cellphone calls.

To be clear though, this wasn't all DROID. Droid is a specific phone from Verizon. Combined Android sales are what's outselling the iPhone. Besides the droid there's also the MyTouch, G1, Incredible, Nexus, MyTouch Slide, Cliq...

In response to the upcoming patent war...

Apple has a profound impact on the computer industry- and most of these phones are really computers with radios in them.

I imagine that for every cellular phone patent, Apple will have a computer patent, including a huge and powerful portfolio to do with multitouch, finger interfaces, gestures and a huge pile of newly important (to the cell phone industry) patents.

I wouldn't count Apple out... not by a long shot. Just ask Microsoft, Intel, IBM, Sun, HP, Cisco and a bunch of others.

About the only company more involved in the genesis of touch interfaces is Fingerworks.

Oh... yeah, right. Apple acquired Fingerworks in 2005.

I'd be very nervous about trying to face Apple down in a patent war.

If necessary Apple could just buy Nokia, Sony (and thus Sony Ericsson), HTC or Motorola. CASH.

Yeah, I wouldn't want to mess with them.

As to Droid outselling iPhone... that's a mis statement. All Android based phones combined outsold the iPhone in the first quarter.

I suspect that the iPhone 3GS's age has at least a bit to do with that. It will be very interesting to see how the market shapes up after iPhone 4 hits in a month or two.

Apple does tend to have rather long product cycles for the industries they are in. A practice I question. Of course, I don't own a company with over $40 billion USD in cash reserves.

I'm sure the legal thing will be interesting but users and the market will never be affected. Blackberry paid when they lost and that's how this will go down. But I bet Apple is infringing on something phone related.

and yes - it's all Android phone combined sales - not Droid alone. Sorry if that's confusing in the title of the thread. But it's the same problem for Apple. Actually it's a bigger problem for Apple that it's not just one phone but an entire industry with loads of their own customers and sales outlets.

Android based phones all run Android apps and Apple is trying to make developers use their system only to write apps. The market environment clearly favors developing in one app and publishing to many platforms. What developer doesn't like that idea?

I'm not counting Apple out. I'm just saying they've got stiff competition coming and I think you'll see their market share in the phone market continue to erode from here as better Android based phones hit the market.

What's the biggest iPhone complaint? It's a crappy phone. Pretty big vulnerability if you ask me.

Aren't they giving Android-based phones away like 1 for $79 (Droid Eris) and then on top of that sometimes offering 2nd phone free? Imagine how many iPhones would sell on Verizon's network at that price point. I wouldn't put too much stock into this, Verizon customers aren't picking Android phones over iPhones, they are picking them over Nokia and Samsung Multimedia phones. Who wouldn't?

I didn't take the time to read the articles, but who would be buying an iPhone right now? Especially after us all finding out what the next generation looks like and with a good chance of being able to shoot 720p video on the new one.

I would think "Of course the droid is outselling the iPhone right now!"

apple will be overtaken by android in the near future but that's exactly the way they want it. apple cares about making lots of money and lots of great, game-changing products, not marketshare. by the time iphone falls behind into obscurity like mid 90's apple hardware, the ipad and the next form factor for cpus (tv, car, toaster, etc.) will shape the market once again.

Apple doesn't care about marketshare? The whole Flash thing is about App marketshare. Now consider that Apple is developing iAd to compete with Google for phone advertising and you see this war is entirely about market share and apps. Will Apple subsidize the iPhone in the future... I bet they will.

Check out what Google thinks of Apps.

"But Google is reportedly stepping up its efforts to court iPhone developers to write for Android, reaching out directly to programmers to convince them to expand their creative horizons. Last month, The New York Times' David Pogue received a message from iPhone app developer Texts From Last Night, which was recently contacted by a Google representative claiming to write on behalf of the digital services giant's Android Advocacy Group. "He basically said that he wanted to open a line of communication with me in case I chose to port the app to Android, and he offered to ship me a free Nexus One to play around with... Contrast with Apple's approach: it took us about three months of resubmitting our app to Apple before they stopped rejecting it for inappropriate content. And even now (after we peaked at the No. 7 paid app), we still have no relationship with anyone there. Huge difference in approaches between the two companies."

Do you feel the lack of call quality on the iphone is an AT&T issue, or an iphone issue. I would assume if iphone brought a 4G phone out this summer and run it on Sprint a lot of people would be happy. Right now, I'm considering the HTC 4G evo that will be out this summer on Sprint.

My current internet on my phone drags in comparison to my Macbook Pro on WiFi- the 4G could change that.

What do you guys think

All the phone makers are about to run out of ways to innovate.

At that point it'll come down to cost, hardware and the app store.

Apple is about to face another commodity war. They won't 'win' but they'll certainly be successful.

There was very little innovation in the iPhone. It was just a lot of what was already being done, done right. It's going to become a stationary target pretty soon when Apple runs out of things to create. The next move is going to be integration with the cloud ala Kin or Google Voice. As well as aggregation ala Win 7/Kin or Palm Pre. There isn't much that a phone OS developer *should* be developing beyond that. After that point you're getting into the realm of apps.

I give cell phone innovation on the OS side 2-3 more releases before they're out of what significant, differentiable innovation. Apple will still do fine by selling great hardware, but I don't see the iPhone domination continueing unabated like the MP3 market. Competitors are stepping up to the plate faster this time. They aren't going to give another 8 year unchecked headstart.

Android is going to start shamelessly stealing from iPhone. WinMo is going to shamelessly steal from Palm/HP and Zune. iPhone is going to become more like WinMo6 and they're all going to average out somewhere in the middle.

The problem with Android is that it doesn't do anything better and in many ways not even close to as well as the iPhone OS. and 50,000 vs. 200,000 is not negligible. At all.

Apple is doing better than every single phone company in the world in 3 years time. And have done it without screwing the consumer.

i have both, and there are plenty of things android does way better than the iphone. At the same time iphone does better than android in certain areas as well. and there's more than enough apps on both platforms than most people will ever need or use. Personally i prefer my droid, at least they'll allow the GPS to talk to you:-P

Bought the Iphone about 3 mounts ago. I love it. Just ordered the ipad 3g. many things have changed since buying Red and going to the dark side. Other than the price. it's all good. I guess I can thank Jim for that too.
