  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Drobo Pro - useable for R3D files?

I think it's been made clear: DO NOT use a Drobo for editing of any kind. Some people like it for archiving things, but it's WAY TOO SLOW to be used for editing, AND its proprietary (non RAID) file system will create massive recovery problems for you if ever anything fails.

For speed comparisons... a Drobo can read/write about the same speed as an external USB drive (>50MB/sec --and most people report less than 20MB/sec !!!). The two GSpeed eS Pros I ended up purchasing for my editing needs (8TB, RAID 5 configuration) can read/write at speeds in excess of 800MB/sec (burst speeds in excess of 1,000MB/sec). That alone should let people know to STAY AWAY from the Drobo for editing.

I also agree with Noah, definitely not meant for editing. We have the DroboPro which we keep for fast access to recent projects (once they've been delivered) just in case there are minor tweaks....really really minor tweaks.
