  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Drive LEMO to eSATA Cable Released - Warranty Killer?

I'm confused...does this mean I can use my own eSATA drive to record to on the Red or is this just to download via eSATA from an existing Red drive?

And why would it kill a warranty?

Yeah there's a ton of stuff out there 'not certified' by RED. The only item I've ever heard of that could void a warranty are the lens mounts and that's because you have to take apart the camera to use it. But even that got worked out, so.... boo on this thread for misleading title. That said, press release is a bit confusing but I can only assume it means you can transfer from the RED-DRIVE to your computer via eSATA and not that you can now connect any eSATA drive to the RED.

About Time...

That mean, You can backup data from RED DRIVE to a normal Esata Disk during shooting ? If yes how you tell RED DRIVE to backup to this normal Disk

I m also a little confused

You use a computer:badputer:

This has been discussed a few times before- at one of those times, as I recall, someone at Red mentioned that the Red drives' firmware has been tweaked in custom ways to enable the specific timing they needed to support recording from the camera. The clear implication of that is, you wouldn't expect any standard eSATA Raid to work for live recording from the camera, even if you had an appropriate cable.

I found the Red-RAM are about 25% faster then the Red-Drives when downloading to esata drives and try to use those whenever possible. Since most "digi-loaders" use Laptops I'm not sure if you'll have much of a benefit on a 2 port express34 card.

Test, Test, and Test Again...:yikes:

Yeay!!

I've only been suggesting/asking for someone to build this very cable for over six months now....

For data offload speed consistency this is a no-brainer. Fastest possible interface, hotplug and robust in the field.

This cable is going to be VERY Popular!

Can anyone suggest a dual eSATA ExpressCard34 card for MacBook Pros that WORKS? I tried a few when I first got our Reds but they all crashed the MacBook Pro. Hopefully newer cards now exist in the marketplace that don't exhibit this tendency!

Cheers,

Paul

be aware that their site says the sonnet tempo is currently "Not recommended for Mac systems with greater than 2GB of RAM" WTF...that's any "pro" mac as far as i can tell. FAIL. has anyone had success with this card on a new MBPro with 4GB of RAM?

Hi,

I use the Sonnet eSata express card on a daily basis with my MBP 17" with 4GB Ram without any problems.

same think, use every day in MBP 15" and MBP 17" no problem, very stable, very fast.

about esata cable... officially I never use anything like this :couch:
