  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Dreamcolor 2480

This means only that Your Sony BVM is not calibrated well.
Use a professional color meter and measure Your Sony,
if it is much more than 100, as You say, than You should hire some professional
to calibrate Your display.
Also, it should be calibrated for every input and resolution individualy.

Orlando. You're wasting your time trying to help Macgregor. He doesn't want nor he appreciates anybody's advice.

You might get 30 ft-L from a 24" BVM, but a 30" BVM will bloom long before you reach it. I would guess you might get 24 ft-L from a 30". There are two schools of thought. 1. Calibrate it to 30 ft-L and ignore the blooming. 2. Calibrate it to below the point of blooming.

When Nicholas Grieco was at EFilm, he would stop before the point of blooming.

good information guys....

any links to documentation or books laying this out more exhaustively...
not just for dreamcolor but in general...

For me, personally, one of the best sources of the monitor or projector set up is the info in the CineSpace manual. Rising Sun is really top notch color science company. So, here is everything you ever wanted to know about color science, but were afraid to ask:)

You are guys asuming that the setting of cd/cm2 is giving a real value and it seems that´s not the case on my screen. So shut your mouthes please. I really know what i´m talking about. And that´s why i asked for guys with similar experiences with this screen.

80-100 cd/cm2 should be the ideal target, but on this screen, that setting is not achieved in the output. Understood? It´s not that i want to go my own way and have a super bright screen. It´s just that the screen theoretical brightness output and real life output do not match. Period.

Maybe it´s an issue with my screen or it happens with all of them. That was what i was trying to figure out before you came giving lessons. But thanks.

Measuring is always a good idea…

Ideally i´d like to choose sRGB but the dreamcolor sets the gamma up to 2.4 and that doesn´t make any sense to me.

2.4 is correct for sRGB. sRGB overall gamma is approximately 2.2, consisting of a linear (gamma 1.0) section near black, and a non-linear section elsewhere involving a 2.4 exponent.
This is exactly what the Dreamcolor does for sRGB and is explained in the Dreamcolor user guide in the gamma section.

Cheers

Hello Miguel,

We finally got the chance to test our Dreamcolors and REC 709 preset is actually calibrated properly and is pretty close to our Panasonic production monitor. We had to download the latest firmware though. Also we are using the display port connection....I assume HMDI would behave the same way...I was told that if we connect our monitors via the other inputs instead then the dreamcolor engines is disabled...just an FYI...

Take care!

We are very happy with our HP's. We calibrate with the HP device but it does not seem to drift, at least for the six months we've had it.

So if Rec. 709 specifies a luminance value of 80 or 100 (which is it!) why would the Dreamcolor preset for 709 be 120?

What is everyone finding to be the best color grading monitor under $2k? Dreamcolor, Flexscan? Are these guys all a Bitch to calibrate?

Note - Newest Firmware is now

TR139
SL071
BL167

As of May 12, 2011.

I do recommend the display - I have it and it's been great. I did just have it crash and burn on me though. Only put out a blank screen, no menus available. HP actually came the very next day with a replacement - No questions asked. Had to do quick re-visit of the boards for calibration with the new one!
